"Any landing you can walk away fr-" "Hush"

Excess speed/energy? Second bounce was a doozy!

In the interest of full disclosure, I've had my share of bounce-n-goes.

Yup wasn't stabilized on final, speed a little fast maybe, looked like only first notch of flappers, poor technique.

Way too much speed. Tried to force it on. Full flap three points are really easy in the 185.

One of my friends who was an tower controller said they'd often clear a pilot for "touch and go" on each bounce like that and hit the operations counter twice.

Looks to me like he was practicing wheel landings and just didn't slow the sink rate enough. Gotta fly it on and pin it, instead he was trying to flare and getting something in between.

Looked like he needed a lot more right rudder in the first attempt.

In fairness, he did maintain directional control.

Id be dying from laughter if a controller kept clearing me to TnG on every bounce.

Taildragger 45 Fox, you were cleared for the option, but I'm going to need you to pick an option and stick with it.

Yeah, I remember learning wheel landings. His looked good compared to mine! Breaking the habit of trying to flare was the hard part. The trick is to slow the descent rate but still fly it on. Took me a while to get the hang of them.

You mean bouncing isn't one of the approved options?

On a serious note, at least he had the awareness and good sense to shove in the throttle and go around again. I've had a few landings like this and I'm sure most people have. In fact, it'd probably be a good thing to have a couple of these during training with a CFI next to you, just to cement when it's time abandon the landing and gas and go.

I agree, looks too fast and looked like he tried to force it on the ground.

Of course I never have bounced a landing.....I was just getting current to carry passengers...... that's my story and I am sticking to it....:lol::lol:

Yup, too much energy + forcing it down will give you those effects. Maybe he should get his 3 points down pat before trying to perform wheel landings.

reminds me of the first time I had to land with a tailwind, which happened to be when returning home from my long solo XC. Got atis and thought it was weird that the the tower had everyone landing with a tail wind and thought maybe they recorded it wrong. Called up tower, sure enough landing with a tail wind. I think it was like 7 knots or something. Bounced it down the runway twice, third time was the charm. As i pulled off the runway before I had time to switch to ground, tower had a plane in the pattern 180 for opposite runway. I'm glad I was able to entertain them. They still owe me a beer!

Btw, on final for the third try, i was thinking F*** - what if i can't get this? Of course now I know just talk to tower and ask for opposite runway.

Looked more like the first couple landing attempts in a taildragger checkout.

He had power in after the first bounce. You gotta cut the power if you start bouncing. Or give it FULL power and go around. Holding power through bounces can get really bad. You actually can "bounce on in" usually around 4 bounces max it stops. Each bounce is less than the previous one. There are a ton of different things taildraggers do on landing. All a lot of fun though. If you keep it straight, you'l usually survive.

This isn't something I make fun of someone for doing. My landings resemble that guy's too much. I had 7 landings this morning with my CFI and I a bounced one of them and let my nose wheel touch slightly on another. I even got a little crooked on one as well, but I got them down safely with no damage to my plane and walked away. I am learning to fly a new plane that is much faster then my Piper. It's a different world and tons to learn. Speed is one of them.

I still say it's still a good landing if he was able to walk away and it was great if no harm done to the plane. You forget way more than you think, when you don't get to fly regularly.

Lol. And ya get an extra click or two if you have to make em work harder like not seeing traffic and needing your base called. Or not answering up right away. Or not acknowledging correctly. Or. Or. Or...........Tower traffic counts ain't worth the paper they are written on. They do pretty thorough audits though when they get close to being upgraded to the next higher level

Guessing he was not looking all the way down the runway at the infinity point, looks like one of those looking too close infront of you landings.

Is that azblackbird?? He's ready to land on some 50 foot strips for his gold mining!

If he bounces it harder, it'll be a candidate for his refurbishment business, too. Some business owner will want it afterward. :)

It's just a piece of business equipment like mah ole John Deere

Have to agree with the trying to do a wheel landing and forced it on responses.

Kind of what I was thinking. Like someone with some previous tailwheel time trying to get checked out in a 185.

My first landing attempts in my 170 weren't much better.

Cpt_Kirk, while watching the video I kept glancing back and forth to your avatar and it really fit. Cracked me up!

BTW, my first attempts to land my RV-8 looked very similar. Glad they weren't caught on film.

That's funny right there. I'm so used to the avatar that I don't ever relate it to anything. Got a good laugh when watching the video again.
