Anti-venom flight during 9/11 shutdown

If you’re going to have the plane escorted by “fighter jets” anyway, why not as well take off from New York?

Just another reason why such a massive shutdown of the system is a mistake. Not to mention the ensuing security theatre. We have become so unreasonable in our severe overreactions to events in the US as well as around the world.

Why be intelligently proactive when you can full stoopid reactive?

I agree with the ensuing security theater part, but you don’t think shutting down the US airspace was appropriate on 9/11?

wouldn't have been faster to give the anti venom to the fighter jet pilots and let them deliver it. Just saying.

Definitely not to the point that medevac flights and the like were grounded. In fact, most GA should not have been grounded. And once it was, it should have been restored immediately have a quick initial threat assessment of what was going on. But our government was frozen in fear. Some may say it was an over abundance of caution but in reality it was a matter of not being able to make sound decisions quickly. The government pizzed its pants.

We all know the attacks used airlines and subsequently airline operations and security are what have been changed. GA has not really had any adverse changes besides the silly TFRs. Why? Because GA is not really considered a threat. So why was it shut down? No good reason.

And why is GA being hampered by these silly TFRs? Did a GA plane attack the location POTUS was at that day or any other day? No.

Heck, by the time the all stop was issued, the attacks were finished anyways. It really didn’t do a damn thing.

The biggest reason for the total shutdown was the massive confusion. They didn't know how many other aircraft were out there. Any aircraft that lost communications was considered a potential threat, the military was intercepting aircraft all over the country. When you can't tell the sheep from the wolves, the easiest thing to do is empty the field. They didn't know the attacks were over at that point.

Yep. Look at what happened in my home town during the Boston Marathon bombing. Literally shut down the city because of those lone creeps. No one questioned the government's authority to declare Marshall law. Scary...

And the kicker was once they lifted it and people could actually go outside the loser was found in 15 mins.

Don't forget the concurrent (and apparently unrelated) anthrax attacks. The whole government was paralyzed thinking one attack involving 20 people was related to another attack likely perpetrated by one person was possibly related to other yet-to-unfold conspiracies.

But, they should have been able to put the pieces together in a couple of days and move forward.

due to the ridiculous month long light airplane shutdown after airliners crashed into buildings, a couple local CFI's came to work at my dad's pizza place, because they still needed to pay their rent and buy beer. As a result of that I decided maybe I should become a pilot. So i guess it wasn't ALL bad, but it was 99.99% stupid

Got my student visa to come to the US the week before 9/11 and got to the US on 9/19, one of the first flights from Amsterdam to the US after the shutdown. The end of that dream came shortly after that, my flight school went belly up, there wasn’t much hope for a job in aviation. Took me almost 17 years to decide to finish what I started back then. Onwards!

That truly sucks - hope it's different for you now. It was a pointless, useless, stupid, vile act. And, so far, has set their "cause" back more dramatically than the inexorable march of civilization that was grinding it down anyway. The 14th century an't coming back.

FYI several air ambulance flights flew on 11 September 2001.

Permission needed to be granted by phone from the FAA and Washington. Had to be on a flight plan and follow it as, well, planned. No jets escorted anyone here in the southwest.

I was in Alaska on that day. Our satellite communications was shut down not long after the attacks happened. (mistake made on the shut off date by the sat company, not shut down by any government agency) We had people in the bush to pick up and food drops to make to other parties on the ground. It all happened that day along with a note on what was going on included in the food drops.

Bad decision or not to ground all aircraft, it happened. Grow up and get over it.

It was really unfortunate that GA was shut down as long as it was. GA and flight training are industries that the US absolutely dominates over our peers. Politics. Some businesses really took a hit.

Like in the market crash in 2007 when the auto execs got roasted on Capitol Hill for having flown in business jets to get there. Have mercy. Let’s punish ourselves for having such a successful Aviation economy.

Best. Dogbert. Ever.

It was completely inappropriate. Especially for as long as they did, and even more for GA.
