when I am flying in actual IMC, with CFI onboard.. can I log PIC time? I am not IFR rated. reading 61.51 iv .. interpreting as I can.

thought?

If you are the sole manipulator of the controls then my understanding is yes, you can log that time. I believe even without a CFI onboard you can do so, as long as someone is on board ACTING as PIC who "has a current medical certificate and have all required endorsements, ratings, and recency of experience for the type of aircraft being flown and the flight conditions under which the flight is conducted (FAR 61.3, 61.31, 61.56, 61.57)" - that person though bears the legal responsibilities for that flight.. he is acting PIC, you just happen to be the one driving the plane

..at least that's how I understand it

You understand it just fine.

Yep. But wait, this is POA. The discussion ain't over yet! I say 4 pages...

One caveat, the aircraft must be one in which you are rated. So no logging time in a friends multi-engined plane if you are SEL.

§61.51 Pilot logbooks.

(e) Logging pilot-in-command flight time. (1) A sport, recreational, private, commercial, or airline transport pilot may log pilot in command flight time for flights-

(i) When the pilot is the sole manipulator of the controls of an aircraft for which the pilot is rated, or has sport pilot privileges for that category and class of aircraft, if the aircraft class rating is appropriate;

Probably not part of the specific question, but a great catch!

I have to start making new friends, 99% of the losers don’t have single engine, let alone multi. They do have humongous boats though

I actually have .3 in my logbook of actual IMC when I was a student pilot. It was a loooong time ago but as I recall we were flying into an ARSA (tells you how long) and the weather was going south so he picked up an IFR clearance in the air and at least part of the time we were in actual. Looking at my logbook it is not logged as PIC
