Yes, but the siren song of the runway for a quick turn back can be very powerful.

No mention of chute leads me to think this may be a stall->spin and maybe no time or not enough altitude to pull chute.

I've flown into Xenia with a friend. Runway 25 is one you don't want to come up short of. There's a pretty steep embankment from the highway to the runway.

Local news in Columbus said the plane crashed on approach to the airport, the pilot was the only person on board and was killed.

As we know, takeoff and landing are two of the highest risk phases of flight.
My understanding is this pilot was an ATP, and flew helicopters in the army.

We have some rwys like that here too. When taking off on an "unfortunate" rwy, I usually ask the tower for a very early turn and if nobody else is in the pattern, I have the option of turning x-wind at maybe 200agl to put myself over pastures instead of a densely populated neighborhood, school, football field etc. I never know when this practice will pay off.

Today was the funeral for this young man. Hundreds of people showed up to pay their respects and share stories. I knew him and I knew he was a special person. It was amazing to see how many people stood up to say something about how Joel touched their lives in and out of aviation. He was a great person, father and one of the best pilots I have had the pleasure to fly with. He was one of us through and through. Loved flying everything he could... big, small, rotors and even had an A&P so he could fly missionaries. Our community lost a good one last week
He is not the first we have lost this way, I always pray it will be the last but I don't thats realistic. He was survived by his Wife Julia Ann and his two twin boys at less than two years old. Some friends have set up a fund me page for her to help out if anyone is interested.
