Well ok, I am being overly dramatic. The last time I was here in Macau (China) we had the big earthquake. This trip I now awaiting the arrival of Typhoon Hagupit.

The red star on the map is Hong Kong. I am a little bit west of there right about where the typoon will be tomorrow in the early am. Right when I need to get on a boat to go to Hong Kong.

Have a safe trip, Scott! Get home so that you can make fun of Missa for cheating on her caffeine addiction. ;)

There are many places on my list ahead of China on my "I'd like to go there" list. Many, many places.

The typhoon is smacking us right now. It did track a little closer than expected and that darn thing slowed down. The storm is still a category 3, i have a nice ocean view up on the 31st floor. The window on a room down the hall from me has come out. It make some very interesting noises as it banged around for a while. YIKES!

Also being on the 31st floor allows for some very nice winds hitting the side of the building.
I would take picture but it is 1am here and all you would see are some dots of light. I was able to change my flight to Thursday instead of tomorrow as I will not be able to take the ferry to HK airport in the morning. The seas are still forecasted to be running with a gale 6 and will be "heavy".

I swear I do not know what I did to anger the gods on this trip. First the flood last weekend, then my mother in laws stroke on Saturday, and now I cannot get home to be with familiy while they are at her bedside due to a huricane. What entrails do I need to sacrifice? Geesh!

Definitely a crappy trip, Scott. Sorry to hear about the troubles in traveling. Hopefully you'll make it home soon.

Next you're going to bring a plague of locust to China...they're gonna kick you out pretty soon!

In all seriousness, stay safe (and dry), and I wish your mother-in-law a quick recovery!

Winds are shifting now that the eye has moved west of me. Here is a pic from my room window. The sounds of the winds whipping around are very interesting. Some of the gusts are less than they were a couple of hours ago.

I'm sorry to hear that, Scott. Is she doing ok? Strokes are tough. The recovery can be tougher. My prayers to you and your family.

Thanks Jason. I have not posted much about it because it is so serious and the situation so tenuous. This started as I was on my way to the airport and I was actually standing at the door of plane talking on the phone deciding to stay or go. I obviously went. It is a serious bleed near the cerebellum. It has stabilized. It is her 2nd stroke and she is refusing treatment. There is paralysis on her left side but for the first time today the word 'fine' was used to describe her condition. I really want to get home to see my family and be with them. This was one of those times it was a hard decision on what to do. In the end I chose to go as there where people to cover me at home but not here. But that is not an easy choice. I figured worse case I get to Hong Kong and then have to turn straight around and fly home.

Scott, as you know I am not too far away in Hong Kong. No doubt we have been in a storm but I do not think our winds got above gale force. I have seen no damage and last night the city was open, even if under a category 8 storm warning. Winds have moderated to the 30s (est) now. I have no doubt that Chek Lap Kok will be operating, and the only question should be: where is the equipment? Good luck getting home (me, too - departing Thursday 4pm-ish) and I am sorry to hear about your MIL's stroke.

Sorry about your mother in law, Scott. I hope she is okay.
Sounds like an adventure in Asia. Have a safe trip home.:blueplane:

My issue is also the equipment UAL did delay the flight by 6 hours. but I also have an almost 1 hour ferry ride and have been advised that it will not be running due to "heavy seas". Seas should subside later today according to forecast. I may try to make it to HK late tonight and find a place to stay once there.

We are still getting a lot of wind and a lot of rain. The hotel I have am in is seaward to the SE so our hotel had some minor damage (that one window). But not much else from what I can see outside. Just a lot of water on the roads right now. Looks like on radar that the heavy rain band will be leaving us shortly (next 30 minutes).

The HK Observatory is still showing sustained winds at the center at 170KM but that should start dying back real soon as the center of the storm is just now making landfall now.

I'm sorry to hear about Karen's Mom - I hope she will be ok. Stay safe, don't get on the boat if the weather is risky.

Well the sun is up. The ocean is really rough from what I can see, looks like 6-8 foot breakers to me. I am guessing but I can see them breaking pretty tall and can see lots of foam on the ocean. The rain has slowed down. Across the street there is a large construction site and it looks like they had just about everything go flying. Almost all the pallets of dry wall or what ever it was that was on the roof is now all over the ground. I did see a couple of cars moving about.

How did you guy in HK do Skip?

The bridge to the mainland and ferry terminal just opened, YEAH! Ferries will start running within the hour and it is brightening up. I just have to kill some time today. Hmmmm I am in a 1 million square meter casino with nothing to do today, hmmmm what shall I do to keep busy???

Mr. Kotter, call on me! Call on me!

Yes,

And the answer is.....

Post on Pilots of America, of course!

And Scott, I am truly sorry about Karen's mom.

Also, please never expect me to go with you on a business trip to China!:hairraise::lightning:

Speaking of gambling.
Last night on Wall Street Business Report, the anchor was interviewing the owner of a casino in Las Vegas. She asked him what he thought of the President's proposal to give $700 Billion to the Treasury Secretary to shore up the US Financial Industry. The casino owner said, "The treasury secretary should bring that money out to Las Vegas and gamble it."
I thought that was pretty funny.

News report of the typhoon from CNN
The death toll from Typhoon Hagupit stood at 18 Thursday -- 10 in China in addition to eight who died when the storm hit the Philippines this week.
In southern China's Guangdong province, the storm arrived with top wind speeds of more than 124 miles (200km) an hour. It toppled about 18,500 homes, uprooted trees and billboards and caused economic losses of roughly 6.3 billion yuan ($923.7 million), according to a report in the state-run China Daily newspaper.
It was what we would have called a strong category 3 storm.
