I recently bought my first video camera. I never really had a reason to get one and I really still don't but I have been selling a bunch of stuff from my various hobbies in order to buy new stuff. I got a nice little Cannon HF11 Vixia HD handheld to play with. I also wanted to get it to learn a little about editing video and some other things. I can at least justify it as part of learning ways in which to use wireless to do video.

Friday I headed up to KSBM to have sime lunch and my pax shot video of the flight back. I had forgotten my cable to plug the camera into the intercom, but that is ok I wanted to play with dubbing music. Anyways here is my first attempt at editing video.

Was this the "before editing" or the "after editing" cut of the video?

After experiencing that pan speed, my only question is whether I can file a whiplash claim. Great quality image, however, once you get it all sorted out. I bought a camera a while back, but afraid to use it in the plane after giving others so much grief.

Those glass house convenants are He77 ain't they?

Being dumber than a rock doesn't help either. I took the damn thing to Gaston's and then forgot it was in the plane. At least I could have taken some footage of the water take-off's.

The only comment I have is to leave out the crappy music. So many videos start out interesting but then get bombarded with crap music, which at that point I turn it off.

And as someone else mentioned, slow down the panning.

If I don't like the music that goes with the video, I shut the music off...

Nice image quality!! And your pax did a pretty good job, even with the panning and zooming (usually the kiss of death for in-flight video).
My dabbling has taught me one important thing, though- don't be afraid to edit more. I've gotten to the point where if it doesn't fit with only one song, I feel it's too long. If there's more footage worth sharing, I'll just create another clip, with a different song. But in general, I think 2-3 minutes, tops, is perfect for online viewing.

What I usually do is first edit to clean up the raw footage, getting rid of anything out of focus, too shaky, blooming (as the camera tries to adjust for light levels), etc... I hang onto that first cut, but then try chopping the heck out of it... you'd be surprised at how little of each shot you need to get the point across, and you'll always have the original if you want to analyze it later or whatever. Careful choice in music helps, too... and cutting so transitions or action work with the music is worth trying- if I create a cool little moment that way, I immediately forge about the coupla seconds I had to cut out to achieve that.

Scott, once you figure out a mount you won't have to worry about pan speed cause the camera will be aimed in one direction. The image is clear which is great. The only suggestion I have is something I am trying to figure out myself and that is Zoom. In addition to Pan Speed quick zooming in and out gets annoying. I think its best if ist left on one zoom setting. Now If I could only figure out what that it. ( the occassional panel shot is of course an exception.)

Yep, that's the one!

Almost as good as, "Tie my ***** to my Leg" and "Orenthal James". Almost.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood? Really? :vomit::rofl:

Seriously, the vid quality looks great, but the big question is: did you put your Mac to good use and use iMovie to edit that?

I did! That was the point of the whole exercise, to learn how to use the editing software. All the comments from the frustrated film students were not what I was looking for. If they had paid attention to the first post they should have noted that I was not shooting the video.

Great job for your first video... Music wasn't bad at all.. video quality amazingly good for a handheld cam.. I guess I need to rig my cam up in the beast and give it a shot too.

I was just trying to stay away from the tired old aviation music choices.

I am surprised that no one has asked me about the version of 'Blue Skies' on banjo that I used. That is an acquaintance of mine named Mark Dvorak. He has several albums out and was the guy who finally got me to pick up the banjo and start learning it.

Excellent.

BTW, what did you mean in your OP about learning to use wireless for video? I'm scratching my head over that one.

I have access to a WAN that can carry video and distribute it, albeit, in unicast right now, I have been modeling the link required to do that and looking at ways to improve capacity while at the same time evaluating potential use cases. This toy is to help me with some user experience questions that I am investigating in my research.

One thing I do is to not start with everything and cut from there, but to start with nothing and add only the best stuff. I'll usually start with the music, if I'm going to have any, and build the video from there. Maybe it's because I'm a musician, but I *hate* the rough music cuts present in a lot of videos. If you're gonna cut music, cut out a verse, and be picky about it - Don't make it detectable that you cut anything, or the cut will be a distraction from the rest!

So what you're saying is, your flight was tax deductible! :D
