Android phone question?

I love my LG Optimus V and super cheap Virgin Mobil service, but have a question.

I listen to Tunein radio a lot and last weekend I was at my mother in laws place clear out in nowhere. I didn't have any cell service but they have great WI-FI.

If I bought another LG Android, but didn't purchase any cell service, could I use the phone for a Tunein radio receiver over WI-FI only? Could I use other aps that didn't require data from cell towers?

IOW, would I have to buy cellular service to use the LG as a radio?

I'm doing just that with my old phone (upgraded). It attaches via WiFi, no service from the carrier at all.

The squeezebox is a good idea, but it is really only good at one thing.

I thought about buying an Optimus V for this same purpose. Mainly to use as an mp3 player and exercise tracker (it has a built in gps). I believe there is a build of CyanogenMod you can put on it as well.

Cheaper than an iPod touch, and you can always activate it as a phone if you or a family member needs one later.

Yes.....however, that is double the price. Plus she really liked the google sky map ap.

How are you comparing price? new to new or new to used? and adding requirements does change things.

My brand new LG Optimus V was $132........pretty much any day on the net.

How does 132 vs 140 equal double the price? Also you are looking at some sort of speaker system for the phone if you want to play music out of it.
