This is true for all operating systems to various degrees. Much is a natural bloat in OSs designed for faster and faster chips. Problem is that with Apple most have little choice in this matter and there is very small window that allows going back(somewhat). Same is now true for Windows 10. Android is different because manufacturers(rather than Google) control releases and are not in the hurry typically. This creates different problems but is going to change soon anyway.

The good news: just like computers before, phones have gone a lot faster now and the pace is going to slow. This will allow longer life out of OS. You can see that already a little. My 5S is quite good on 10.3. That's 4 major iterations removed from its release i think. iPhone 4 was unusable after 3 iterations.

I ran my 5S on iOS 8.x for as long as I could. Was forced to update to 10.3.3 because pretty much all apps I use required 9 at minimum. Not planning to go to 11 at all.
 
Correlation is not causation. Of course your phone seems slower when a new model is available. Or it actually is, clogged up with umpteen apps etc. That Apple, the world leader in phones, would risk it all with sabotage seems unlikely at best.
 
They usually release an OS update right around a new phone release. These updates include new features meant for the new phones. No surprise or conspiracy there.

It would be nice if we could keep the older OS on our devices and still get new apps but obviously that presents some problems that apple has no incentive to solve.
 
Yeah, the new phones won't talk to the old computers, then the new computers won't talk to the old phones. Rinse and repeat. On the fence about updating the old 5S any more. Seems to do everything just fine.
 
I do every update as they come out. Never a single issue with any of the several iPhones I've had through the years. I still have a 5S with ATT and a 7+ with Verizon. The service area determines which works better but with a strong signal both work equally well.

Me too...I think part of it has to do with what your definition of "slow" is...My phone may be slow, but I don't notice.
 
If you don't need new apps and don't update your old ones, the old OS works fine and your phone stays speedy fast.

Except that if you wanna use ForeFlight... since that does need updates and conforms to the the "current OS"... so there you go.
 
I have a 6S Plus which is only 2 and a half years old...but I updated to iOS 11 and it is still blazingly fast. I can’t see keeping a phone longer than 3-4 years personally.

I don't think I've updated Foreflight since I renewed my annual subscription. Using OS 9 versions on iPad Air and iPhone 6S Plus. Maybe 9 is still valid and the reason? I don't know.
 
I updated both my 6s and mini2 and I don't see any difference in speed. Pretty sure they made the fonts bolder, among other things.
 
Still using a plain-ole iPhone 5 every day (100% remote wage slave). It doesn't seem slow at all. This article is specious...

No, this was done by a single student, it is someone's private opinion, nothing more, this is not a 'study' in any stretch of this word. In order to use 'Harvard' here you would have to show the results were peer-reviewed, otherwise it has next to zero weight. Sorry, typical Daily Mail garbage, I have seen it too many times.

It's fine to drag your feet on an OS upgrade, but in the long term you're seriously opening your system to compromise by evil doers if you insist on staying behind the current releases.

Updated my 7Plus - no problems works fine. Needed a little tweaking since they turn all the marketing and tracking back on - but that like everything.

Updated my 10.5" iPad Pro Plus - again - the hardware was designed for 11 so it works fine.

Foreflight works fine on both systems.

Did not update my iPad Mini 4 since I use it to fly - by the time FF gives us the ok to update to 11 Apple will release 11.1 because of the glaring Office 365 bug - and the merry goround continues -
 
I only have an ipad for flying (killed me to but it), would never join the iphone cult though. This does not surprise me in the least.

So someone correlated SEARCHES for slow iPhones and assumed that it actually happens?

How did this even make the news?

Look at the spike in "is the world ending" searches with Harvey, Irma, Maria, and the apocalypse that is supposed to occur this weekend.

If everything was hunky dory, no one would be looking for solutions.

Other than that, get rid of all those stupid "apps" that clog up the pipes. My "flying" iPad Air2 has nothing extraneous on it.
 
Turning off background update on apps can really speed things up. I only allow a few select apps to background update.
 
Nowadays with Samsung droid devices you cannot uninstall some of the "bloatware" apps that come with the phone even if you don't use them. Those apps get updated often still. I have windows ten that tries to update when it wants to but I have a workaround that stops automatic updating you can't turn it off like previous operating systems. I have been using that machine for years no issues. I build my own PC's, I don't "surf" the internet much.
 
And did you notice how fast the prices are jumping on these phones too Samsung Galaxy Note 8 / Iphone 8 $1,000 (Including taxes, shipping..etc). I'm grateful that I could afford it but they know people will buy it and line up in droves to get one.
 
I have, for several years, refused to do Windoze Updates. It seemed every time I did so they broke more things than they fixed. I bought my current computer in March (Win 7 Professional 64 bit) and have not updated it once. It ain't broke. Why should Microsoft tell me it needs fixin'? OTOH, I have a very strong anti-virus program but if I should get one I know how to get rid of most viruses.

I have a Win7 machine that has McAfee virus "protection", I swear it causes non-complete startup into Windows.

You can if you root it. Granted, I have a Motorola and not a Samsung, but I don't know of many droid phones that don't have very detailed rooting instruction videos on you tube.

One more reason to have a droid and not an apple!
 
You are taking really serious risks if you don't update your Windows, OS-X, Android, or iOS operating systems periodically.

In the case of Windows you're asking for Ransomwear. And you're antivirus probably won't detected that until it's too late.

Yep. I remember being excited as hell when I upgraded to a 1200 baud modem that didn't have to have a phone hooked up to it. You could just plug the phone line straight into the computer. It even had two 5-1/4 floppy drives. It was bad ass.

you might be surprised at the android devices that don’t have good rooting options. I had to use that crap Kingroot on my old Samsung phone and ASYS tablet and can’t find anything to work easily on my G3, even the ones that say they do.

And Apple can be jail broken. Far easier than Android because there aren’t as many flavors.

That is what they tell you.Windows updates WON'T protect you from Ransom ware. If you follow these tips you should be pretty much alright,.

#1. Have an updated Antivirus program (Run a FULL system scan weekly at least)
#2. DON'T open attachments unless you know where it's from and even then still be skeptical. Viruses could infect your friends address book.
#3. Back up your files on the cloud for safekeeping. Ransom ware will encrypt your local files NOT your cloud files keep a backup AT ALL TIMES. Possibly two sources
#4. Update your website passwords at least once a month. Letters, numbers and symbols. Those are hard to crack.
#5. Check your internet habits, do you go on a lot of new sites per day? (If so do a full system scan w/ check for rootkits) check for viruses once a day.

Alas I talk about this stuff everyday, I rather talk about airplanes ;)
