Final Approach
I have another little project bringing a dormant airplane back to life. I like doing that. I have like four or five of those projects going right now. This is an American Yankee AA1. Original American Yankee. Prior mechanics had taken the gear off without removing the wings to address some corrosion and was not able to get the gear back on without removing the wings nor were they able to get the wings off. I was able, with the help of the owner whose a pretty decent mechanic himself, to get the wings off, correctly install the gear, and reinstall the wings successfully.
The next thing I'll need to tackle on it will be delamination issues on the trailing edges of flaps and ailerons. Common issue no doubt in these old "Grummans". The original service manual does tell you how to make these repairs and mention Kit 125 or something like that. But I'm curious, since that service manual is almost 50 years old, is there a better way or better adhesives? Does anybody know what would be the latest and greatest for this repair?
