American Airlines hits pole in DFW

ok, maybe the C-150 driver could land an airliner... just let's not let them taxi...
 
It hit the object next to the pole, which was much more substantial and the reason the aircraft yawed. The impact tore off the winglet.
 
Wasn't me!

Once flew with a guy that was a First Officer on the 727, and he told a story about a Captain that had no personality whatsoever. Didn't speak at all during the entire trip, really weird dude. Anyway on the last leg as they were pulling into the gate the Captain finally says, "If your nosewheel isn't on the yellow line and you hit something, YOU'RE ****ED!" Only thing he said the whole trip. :)

In fairness, that's a pretty stupid place to put a pole. I know there's something else there, and the same for that.
 
Someone posted on a Facebook group that he was maybe following a road centerline and that caused him to hit the pole.

There are well marked yellow centerlines that place you on either side or center of the exit, but there is an unmarked 'edge' that he might have followed by mistake. Even when properly centered on the yellow line, those poles definitely feel close!

Yea it’s been over a year since I’ve been to DFW. Will definitely be more vigilant and make sure the CA doesn’t mess up:)
 
This appears to be where it hit, coming out of the alleyway between the A and C terminals. He may have been following the actual boundary edge marking?

Years ago at the home 'drome, the airport authority decided to repaint all markings in the tie-down area. First they painted out all existing markings, then they painted in the new boundary edge markings. Then they paused...with no new centerlines painted. A student pilot didn't pick up on the difference and carefully followed the edge marking right up until he clipped a hanger with a wing which swung the plane around allowing the prop to cut a beautiful semicircle in the wall of the hanger (the prop stopped when it hit a horizontal crossbeam).
 
I saw a Cessna 195 do that at Oshkosh one year.

Good guess. The distance checks out — from the satellite image, if the nosewheel was on the edge marking, the aircraft would have hit the light pole right about where it did in the video.

Too many markings at a lot of airports. Makes it way more confusing than it needs to be. The FAA is very liberal on their sign and marking requirements at airports. Too much information.

Oh man airliners are treated hard. If you knew how many patches and repairs are on most airliners your jaw would drop!
