My wife and I went to Port Aransas this past weekend for a little beach time and stayed at Amelia's Landing. It was a great little hotel, the room was fantastic, and the owners were incredibly nice, if a little distracted by a pending aircraft purchase! I would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to get away to the Texas coast for a little salt air therapy. I can't wait to actually fly down from Austin. Thanks Mary and Jay!

I may never get to see their hotel, but I did get to spend the better part of a week with them at the Reno Air Races in between their hotel, my hotel, and the airport. Very nice people.

I was just at KRAS having lunch on Saturday. Next time, I'll have to stop by!

+1 on the kudos for the Honecks and their Deluxe Accommodations.

Plus, they speak English!

Hey! We resemble these remarks! lol!

Seriously, thanks for the nice recommendation. We're not the biggest, or the fanciest, but we think we've figured out what pilots want and need in a hotel -- and (amazingly) that seems to be what EVERYONE wants and needs in a hotel!

And it sure helps to have 15 miles of world-class beach just a few blocks away, too.
:) :D

Plus, Shiner Bock.

Strangely, I didn't get to quaff a Shiner with ANY pilot guests this weekend. It was sort of a lost weekend, with much tension and stress surrounding the RV-8A purchase.

Still, all's well that ends well.

The name of this thread led me to believe that Amelia Earhart finally returned from her trip.

Well, our hotel IS named after that lady. After all, she became famous for getting lost trying to find an island...and we *are* on an island.

Not to worry. If they sell it at whatever store I end up in located near Gastons in Arkansas, I'll buy a pack, pass some around POA, and raise a toast in your honor (and Mary's)

"Store" and "near" don't go in the same sentence at Gaston's, but you'll have a fun ride into "town". :)

Gaston's has a nice restaurant on site. I hope you all raise a glass while there, knowing that Mary and I are with y'all in spirit.
:D

They said I could borrow a van. They said it was 8 miles away. I know I'm from San Francisco and everything but geez! Tim had to drive 45 mins from PHL to the WINGS Fly-In with Tracey and I in 2012. It can't be that far out.

Tell you what. If we have time I'll get some at the DFW area before I board the King Air.

Should have sufficient payload on my trip to Osh this year to bring Jay some really good beer.

I assume you mean that other extraordinarily fine Texas brew, Devil's Backbone (ABV 8.10%), from the Real Ale Brewing Company in Blanco, TX.

Just for that I'm bringing the Devil stuff instead to the POA meeting (if I have time to make a stop in Dallas for beer).

Gee, didn't you name your pretty little RV " Amelia" as well?

Better lay in an extra hand held GPS....

lol. We fly with three on-board GPS's, not counting our smart phones. Anyone who could get lost with such equipment on board doesn't deserve to fly.

Lone Star beats them all. :)

About like arguing who has the best BBQ in Texas.

Blacks is best in Lockhart.

Damn you guys are making me miss home.

I think we might be hitting on a good reason to conduct a flying tour for a long weekend...

Designate an airport as a gathering point, then do flying BBQ tour of the top spots in Texas. At the end, publish a blog of the experience, and hold a vote on best ribs, brisket, sausage, chicken, venison, 'dillo, and sauce.

Well, the problem is they have become enraptured by The Dark Side.
Soon, they will be spending their waking hours in a little shed at the airport making loud, metallic, banging noises.
Fight it Jay, fight the Dark Side.
Nothing good can come from it. Look at the Reverend Wright's boys. It ate up their lives. They forsook hearth and home to spend their time in a dark shed.

I havn't been to either one of these.... Looks like I need to take a trip to the south Austin area haha.

You can fly into Lockhart and reserve the crew car. Also, Luling has an airport but I don't think there is a car there, or anything else for that matter.... Maybe you could pack one of those foldable bikes?

I didn't realize so many people are from Texas on this forum. I'd be all in for doing this. Don't have my PPL license just yet(22 hours in) , but if the drive wasn't horrible I'd show up(or fly once I get my license)
