Amelia's Landing, Port Aransas, TX, KRAS

I didn't realize so many people are from Texas on this forum. I'd be all in for doing this. Don't have my PPL license just yet(22 hours in) , but if the drive wasn't horrible I'd show up(or fly once I get my license)

We have a good BBQ place right here in Port A, owned by a Murphy Moose pilot/owner, no less. Called "Beaches".

Just had his brisket nachos, and brisket slathered baked potato for dinner, in fact. Within crawling distance of the hotel, thankfully. (Bob has a dozen Texas beers on tap! *burp!*)

I'll definitely pay your hotel a visit sometime Jay. I live near the coast near Freeport and would love to fly down your way, seems like it could be a cool little trip. But, I need to get my license first, and I'm taking a lot of time off so that I can go to Oshkosh this year.

Well, be sure to stop by our HOPS party on Wednesday night in the North 40 at OSH. (There's a thread on this board explaining the particulars.). EAA is even putting on an extra night airshow, just so we have something to watch!
:D

Now there's this little matter of you needing to do a long cross country trip during your training.... nuthin in the regs says it can't be overnight at a certain aviation themed hotel...

Will be on the Island last week of July( unfortunately not flying). Will have to stop by Amelia's and get a T shirt .....love the logo:yes::yes:

I like the way you think!

Sounds good, I'll try to stop by!

Um, dude. Last week of July is Oshkosh!

If you arrive after July 26th, you will meet our staff.
:D

Can be enjoyed in the new cold room Jay installed in his hangar (see his facebook page)

Well, the cold room is not technically "new" -- just re-deployed, now that the real heat is here.

It is a Godsend, down here. We turn the AC on when we depart for a flight, and come back to a little island of coolness inside the 120-degree hangar.

Guerrilla engineering at its best! :D

So Jay, with an RV8 will you now join us "Are you nuts, a canopy in the Texas summer?!" crowd?

That is awesome! This should be built in every hanger down here.

Yeah, that bubble in South Texas is a drawback. But, like I said, every airplane is a compromise....

If you don't plan on spending a lot of time inverted there are some film products of varying degrees of darkness you can apply to the upper quadrant of the canopy that make a difference. Are you sure the RV-8 won't just out run the infrared and stay cool??? :dunno:

Yeah, if we don't want one of those retractable curtains, the "Cling-on" dark plastic sticky things are an option.

We're gonna start with cling-ons, baseball caps, and full-eye dark sunglasses, for now. With the -8's climb rate, we won't be hot for long. :D

Did you not take a picture, and instead take a screenshot of you taking a picture??

Gag.

Shiner Bock is the best beer in Texas.

I see that one local bar and one local store carry it. I don't drink much beer but when I do, and all that. I will give it a try on your recommendation.

It's a very smooth bock beer. Very little after taste, not too heavy.

Although we've got Bud Light friends who call it "that heavy German beer y'all like", so YMMV.

Tried the Shiner Bock last night. I was shopping on the way home from flying and noticed they had a sampler 6-pack of Shiner. I pulled the Bock and put it in the cart. It was not priced for individual sale but the cashier keyed it for me as something that was, That was nice of her.

Anyway, certainly a nice-tasting beer. I am no beer expert but it reminded me of my favorite beer and the one that I try to get on the few occasions when I order beer, Killian's Red.

Well, thanks for closing that loop for my nearing-TBO brain cells: fell in love with Shiner Bock when we lived off and on in Texas in the 90's. So much so that the 'Texas Bock' recipe clone is my go to when I make my own (pretty close, and a definite crowd pleaser). Now I know why even my wife likes the clone recipe: Killian's was our go to pitcher when we would skip out early from our engineering labs when we were dating in college and hit our favorite deli/pub to write up our reports!

On that note, out to the keezer to pour a couple of bocks . . .

Exactly, although Killian's has a funny aftertaste that Shiner Bock managed to eliminate.

Shiner isn't the best beer I've ever had, but it's my go-to, everyday drinkable choice.

What is your "top shelf" choice, Jay?

If Shiner and Killian's are the best you guys can do I see another gargantuan reason not to live in Texas. Even the reject beers I buy for twelve bucks a case are better than those.

I don't drink enough beer to have much a preference. I found that I like Killian's more than most so that is what I go with when I am in the mood. If they don't have it then I will get something dark from the tap. I would have to refresh my memory about the aftertaste.

When I was young and in NY in the early 70's, we leaned toward Rolling Rock and Molson's Ale.

I had a German doppelbock the other night that was amazing. Smooth, rich, creamy, wonderful.

Sadly, it was like drinking sherry, proof-wise, so I don't recall the name. :D

I am partial to lagers, bocks, doppelbocks, and porters. The older I get, the darker my beer gets. Although I still don't like Guinness.

BTW: For those who may be curious about why I am so enthusiastic about flying (and living) on an island off the Texas Gulf coast, below is a picture I took last night. Port Aransas on Mustang Island is truly one of the most beautiful places I've ever flown, and I get to do it almost every day! :D

Jay, you should come fly in the Caribbean! I'll make sure that even you old RV pilots get treated the same as the others do here :)
