I may be flying into the Atlanta area, Alpharetta in late March for business. Is Dekalb-Peachtree, KPDK is the best airport for accessing this area via GA? If so, FBO suggestions? I'd be there one or two nights. Thanks!

I would opt for Lawrenceville if you're going to Alpharetta. The traffic between PDK and the north exurbs is nightmarish.

You must not have been here for a while. The traffic betwen Lawrenceville and Alpharetta can suck just as bad. Traffic's OK at 3AM, though! :D

Gas will not be any cheaper at LZU. Stop at 19A if you can!!!

Cobb County (RYY) could be an option too, depending on which side of Alpharetta you'll be on.

P.S. If you stop at LZU, maybe you can park your Tiger next to my Commander!

Rich. Are you based at LZU? If so maybe we can hook up. Also, how long will it take me to get from LZU to Alpharetta mid day or so?

Yes I am, and meeting (not "hooking up" -- Tony and Jesse have that covered, LOL) would be a great idea.

Depending where in Alpharetta, I'd budget 45 mins to an hour. PM me if you have an address and more specific time of day and I could give you a better idea.

Well, the world gets smaller! Let me know next time you fly into LZU...
I'll do that Rich, now that I have an airplane for actually going places.

Thanksgiving 05 I drove from Jax to Suwanee on Wednesday, hitting the crap about halfway between Macon and Atlanta. I swore I would never, ever do that again. The stage was set for a new airplane.

Yeah, I don't think I'd use the term "hooking up" with them. :D

I live in Lawrenceville and fly out of KLZU and used to live in Alpharetta and still pass through on my over to visit friends in north Marietta and Woodstock. I concur, barring wrecks on the road you can probably be over in Alpharetta in about 45, but if you are going somewhere not right along, say, GA 140, it could add the 15 minutes.

Depending on the time you expect to arrive I'm not sure I wouldn't take PDK anyway, for the proximity to I-85 -> I-285 -> GA 400. That's out of the way from PDK but easy. I'm big on easy when navigating a car. Not that I'd dissuade anyone from my home 'drome, of course, and PDK is insanely busy with air traffic. LZU is busy, but not as busy as PDK.

Has anyone considered KGVL? Gainesville is quite accesible and fuel is very cheap at our school's own Shell self-service fuel depot. Last weekend, it was at $3.38.

There's no easy way across from any given airport but GVL may be the best bet. What part of Alpharetta are you headed to?

I never thought I'd be paying attention to a thread like this. But we just got word that our son (who now lives in Phoenix AZ with his wife and our three grandkids) has accepted a job offer that will take them to Alpharetta.

Guess I'll have to pull out the charts and re-read this thread. We may be paying you all a visit some day soon.

KPDK- Mercury FBO

Peachtree Industrial (SR141) North. Stay near Winward Parkway. There is a Marriott at the interchange. Eat at the Downwind at PDK before you leave.

Alpharetta is very nice, but it's expensive to live there if you buy. Apartment rentals didn't seem too bad. At least the nice place I rented was about the same as it would have been in any other nice neighborhood in the Atlanta metro. There is so much tech expansion going on up there, traffic on GA 400 during rush "hour" is almost as bad in the "reverse" direction of what you'd think, as it is to and from Atlanta. Apparently a lot of people who work up that way live down toward perimeter or inside it. I moved to Lawrenceville when I bought a house. Only by comparison to GA 400 would 85 be a relief.

What would be the drive time from GVL to Suwanee? North Suwanee, actually.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'll look at where in Alpharetta I'll be going, but its sounds like LZU and PDK are both good options.

I have no clue what the other guy is driving. He may have not upgraded to the newer Flintstone sedans!

You're looking at about thirty minutes or so during most of the day. The far northwest would make it longer during morning commute; right forty minutes during evening commute.

KGVL is right off Exit 20 on I-985. So, it's twenty miles to I-85 and another two miles to Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road (Exit 111 on I-85). The only thing that may make any part of it as pain is if they are located near Peachtree Parkway, inside of Forsythe County. McGinnis Ferry Rd is a fun commute since it's still two-lane across both counties and the Chattahoochee River. The entire Suwanee zip code is split in half by the Hootch with only one bridge crossing. It may be more beneficial to get off at Exit 4 on I-985 at Buford and go across.

If you PM me a more exact address, I'll give you the ideal driving directions. I've done courier work around this region for way too long; nearly eleven years. I do pretty well with it except for those times I want to shoot cell phones out of other driver's hands. The cops seem to be split over their support for me on this idea. :dunno:

Where you're going and what time of day can be critical. That area can have absolutely the worst traffic in metro Atlanta depending on where you are and at what time. There are parts of the area that are technically called Alpharetta when they are more North Roswell. The side west of GA 400 is better than the east side. There are definately roads to stay away from, specifically Holcomb Bridge Rd at any time of the day. I would say that PDK is your best bet for beating road traffic during the middle of the day but air traffic will be heavier. I doubt RYY would be your best airport unless you're on the extreme west side of Alpharetta and there aren't many bussinesses there. Mathis Airport is close but the runway is very short.

So, it's near the end of March. You coming for a visit or not???

Suwanee, but I have wheels. Did a T&G at Lee Gilmer the other day...
Then stop in and see Catherine Cavagnaro at the University of the South Mathematics & Computer Science Dept. She was Bill Kershner's partner in his aerobatic training course, and has said that she might be interested in coming to Gaston's this year. Schmooz the lady! :) Convince her to join us! (Also, express our sympathies at the loss of her partner :( )
