Airventure 2020 cancelled

So what’s the best thing to do in the fall or summer as a replacement? Maybe that should be its own thread.

Already talking about it. A day trip, take a few photos, and head back south...
I made some disparaging remarks about those who will show up anyway. But I think I was envisioning those who would show up, try to plant some tie downs and set up camp under their wing.

But this? This I can understand. Fly in just to make the flight. Land on a dot, taxi in, maybe get out and take a few pics then leave. That makes sense to me. This I would probably do myself if I had the opportunity. Thanks for presenting a better perspective. :D

nice mug collection!
I was doing that with sun n fun hat pins. Not nearly as long though....but still. Then for several years I showed up at the tail end of the week and they were out of stock... Broke my trend so now I just don't bother.

I'm slow enough that I high five lots of kids along the sidewalks and generally cross the finish line drinking a beer a spectator handed me

Whaaaat? I need to run with your people

Have to change my plans ,was looking forward for a good show.

Last year I was polishing off a Strawberry Natural Lite as I crossed the finish. I thought it would be light and refreshing. It was lukewarm and not at all refreshing. I'll do better next time.

Not sure I see the alure about going to KOSH when the show isn't on. I've been there and it's just a sleepy little class D airport. It's the people who make the show.

Someone needs to notify the Hilton Garden Inn. They still are listing rooms at $625/night that week. The next week they go back to the usual $115.
I don't know what's more insane - the Hilton price gouging or people paying $625 to be cheated out of the experience of camping under a wing.

To be fair to them. When we've flown in we've stayed at the hotel Sunday night to get a good rest and shower after the flight from Tx, and then camped Mon-Sat. Sunday night isn't as overpriced.

Our luck has been good too. Of the four times we've gone, the worst storms were on Sunday.

I anticipate a few informal fly-in gatherings start to get loosely organized by individuals, not clubs, if things begin to improve on the contagion front. Even doing so with social distancing. We are all ready to break out of quarantine and can’t wait until 2021.

This is so true about everything I did where I used to have fun in my younger years. It’s cool nostalgia to go back, but without the friends, it’s really nothing. Plan your own micro-OSH with a few friends over a weekend and camp under the wing at K _ _ _.

It's pleasure going through the museum when things aren't packed. I go to Oshkosh four times a year to teach a class, and have two hours to kill before having to leave to drive back to Milwaukee. Museum fits the bill nicely.

That would assume the museum re-opens by the end of July, of course....

I’ll probably fly up after visiting a friend in Chicagoland. An uncontested time to fly the Fisk arrival for practice, visit the museum and the Sonex factory.

Cheers

Some of us are not fans of camping. Others prefer camping where one is not near anyone other than their family/party.

I’ve never been. Not a fan of camping or $600 hotel rooms that are really $120 hotel rooms. If I go I’ll stay with my BIL & SIL in Kenosha and drive up for the day.

That hotel borders the airport property. There are lots of $120 hotel rooms that are within a 30/40 minute drive of the show and lots of those rooms can be had for much closer to $120 during show week. There are also other options. Lots of locals will go on vacation and offer their homes for rent for the week. That can be a very good option if you're with a group of 5-10 people who don't care for camping in a tent.

I do enjoy camping...like in the woods stuff.... but I hear you..... some folks just aren't into roughing it. Camping at a fly in is something different entirely though.

Anyway, I've done both Airventure and Sun n Fun several times both ways....staying elsewhere and driving in for the day & camping on site (in the campground, never under the wing sadly). It's just not the same experience at all. In fact we were debating about heading up to see my SIL/BIL who have a place in Green Lake and my DW was going to time it so I could do airventure too. I pretty much didn't want to even bother. If I'm going to airventure I want to go to airventure and stay there. If I'm going to visit family, then I want to go visit them. Just miss out on so much of the experience in my opinion, driving in for the day. A hotel on the fence though, perhaps the best of both worlds...but at $600 a night and I'm sure even at that rate it's hard to book.... I'm not likely to ever experience it that way!

I've been there and it's just a sleepy little class D airport.

That's true for 51 weeks per year. (Or 52 weeks this year.)

But one year-round attraction is worth mentioning: the EAA museum. It's good, and it's there near the airport entrance.

Okay. God SIL / BIL... sister in law and brother in law. DW? Designated wife? Danged wife?

I'm envious of those that like to do it. I'm sure you're right that camping at Oshkosh makes it even better. Being right in the middle of things usually is. We try to stay right in the middle of things when we travel. That often means spending a bit more, but being able to just walk out the door (or tent) for a short walk to everything is really nice.

My mother says, "Camping is staying at a hotel without room service." So you can see that I didn't get much of a chance for experiencing it growing up.

Yes, but without the show it will be camping without toilets, showers, transportation, easy access to food, etc...

Even though Airventure 2020 won’t happen, you can still buy the hats and shirts at the EAA store. Can’t decide whether I want one.

Our usual gang is tossing around the idea of flying up to OSH anyway.

Instead of camping in the North 40, we will hotel it. At least that way, we can still help our fellow small business owners (who will be as devastated by this economic shutdown as we have been) to survive. Places we usually frequent like Friar Tucks, La Sures, and all the bars we haunt will surely appreciate our money.

This will be our 38th year in a row in OSH. The people we hang with our 90% of the reason we attend. We hope to keep the streak going!

On any given random day without the virus and not around the show dates, would it be approved to let a person park an aircraft (or better yet camp) in any of the many random places on the field, such as the vintage area near theater in the woods, the warbirds area, North 40 near the bath house, etc..?
My guess is no.... i recond they'd steer you to an FBO's ramp....

I do see on the map that Hilton has a parking ramp. I didn't realize that. I'm assuming I could park there and stay at the hotel on any given random evening.....

I suspect they'll let you taxi where you want. We've got some guys who arrive way early and his plane is sitting out by itself and he's camped under a tree. The problem is that there will be ZERO amenities. No port-o-lets and the shower buildings are going to be locked up. Much of what you see that appears to be more permanent is forklifted in just prior to the show (I came in one year and tower told me that there was a building coming down the taxiway toward me). Note that much of vintage is a hayfield when not being used for the show.

The problem is also getting off the field. A few years ago they put an 8' high fence around the entire field. Short of going to the FBO or one of the maintenance shops, or the Hilton, I'm not sure how you'd get off the field proper.

Which is why I would not be surprised to see the airport notam'd closed the entire week.

I can't see that happening, but EAA needs to put out a note actively discouraging folks from attempting to stage a flashmob fly-in. "Understand there will be no access to grass parking, camping areas, etc. There will be no showers, no porta potties, no food, and the TSA won't take kindly to people roaming around the ramp and other areas of the airport. Please don't plan to "just drop in" at KOSH during the regularly schedule dates for the event."

TSA? Despite the idiotic fence and security road that chewed up a lot of valuable airplane parking during the show, OSH is not a secure airport. They've not had air service there for over a decade. I'd be surprised if the TSA could even find the place.

If kindly asking were all that was required to keep Americans from doing certain things there would be no state imposed lockdowns right now. Letting you down is the one thing you can always count on people to do.

Regardless, I've seen the idea posted here and a half dozen other places. "We'll just fly in, taxi to the grass, and pitch a tent."

"Bad idea Mav."

I don't think there will be any rooms available at the Hilton this year. My guess is if you have a reservation and cancel it, you won't be on the list for next year....

EDIT: Just checked the Hilton website, and they have availability at $600 a night.

But NO COFFEE MUGS, dammit.

How about coming up with your own design - one to sort of stand out in the row?

There are lots of companies which will make custom cups and I bet you could even sell some on PoA and elsewhere. Would need to be careful to avoid copyright violations.

Yep. And if they bring you in on 36, land LONG. Dang that's a long taxi to the FBO if you land on the south end of 36 in a 172 and make the first taxiiway.
