I'm traveling to Amelia Island in September, and was hoping to rent a 172 or similar when I'm down there. Does anyone have any info on where I might be able to rent? It looks like 55J is the closest, but I would be willing to travel to another nearby airport if necessary. I'd be fine with flying with a CFI too.

Don't know about Amelia, but if you want to go down to Craig (there is a ferry that cuts across the inlet) you can try these guys: www.sterlingflight.com. I occasionally use their instructors, sometimes their planes. The Warrior is a dog. The Archers are nice but they're only for dual. I don't fly Cessnas, so I can't tell you about them. The Diamond is great. The Seneca is OK, but it's only for dual as well.

A buddy rents from these guys: http://www.fly-us.com/rental/default.html, also at CRG. He generally rents the T182T, and I've flown that with him. It's a nice airplane if you want to spend that much. Be advised this place requires proof of at least $5000 in renters insurance to rent here.

Thanks, Ken. That's great info. It might be a good chance to give a 182 a try. Given the airspace around there, I'm fine flying with an instructor. Heck, I'm just trying to fill in my little map on where I've flown!

Leslie went up with a gal who has a 172 with extended range tanks when she was in Amelia Island earlier this year. I don't think that she instructs or that the bird is available for rent, though. If she's feeling up to it, I'll ask her to post on this.

Sterling's a good FBO but it's a 28 mile drive from airport to airport. Could take an hour depending on the wait at the ferry crossing. Still it's the next closest place.

Stan,

I stopped by Fernandina Beach several years ago (early 2003) and inquired about airplane rentals. It was the oddest thing - They had airplanes, but no instructors! One of the airplanes was an Archer, I think they also had a 152 or something else I wasn't interested in.

As for an instructor, they gave me a card for Keoki Gray. He wasn't available, but I think Ken has spoken very highly of him. You'll probably need to book in advance.

Flew in there last Spring. Nice little place. Airport was busier than hell that day, and for some reason no one flew a standard pattern; everyone landed straight in.
