Aircraft themed furniture...

Desks, chairs, bars, etc...

I see this stuff from time to time. On FB, Pinterest, etc. It seems pricey and "fan boy" seems writ all over it.

Is there really a market for it? Would anyone pay these prices?

I mean, even key fobs from old aircraft are $30 plus..
 
Most of my "aviation art" is Hobby Lobby stuff, aside from the ubiquitous replica wooden prop from Sporty's or wherever the wife got it. Can't imagine paying the prices they ask for simple desk lamps made from old radial jugs or engine nacelle coffee tables. I think the expensive stuff is more likely to be found in an aviation-related company boardroom or executive office.

A buddy of mine fabricated a sofa from a disused pylon float from a Grumman Albatross. You can find similar items on the interweb for a buncha money.

There is usually at least one vendor at Oshkosh selling furniture and other household stuff made from aircraft parts.

If I had all the money in the world, my man cave might be furnished with that kind of thing. Fortunately, I already own airplanes, so I'm guaranteed to never have all the money n the world.

There is a market, albeit a small one. Which is partly why the prices are so high.

You typically see this stuff in corporate office spaces rather than private homes.

Back before the scrap part/SUP/liability fiascos of the 90s caused the people to handle rejected aircraft parts differently, a group of us made good beer money fabricating clocks, lamps, ashtrays, etc out of scrap parts. From O-320 cylinder lamps and piston ashtrays to helicopter blade clocks and flight control tube deer stands we lived good until the part supply dried up due to several clowns being caught reselling rejected parts. But at those prices above perhaps I should make a few calls and restart the production line again....:rolleyes:

That's the perfect summary of how I view the thing.

Yet... my hangar is loaded with spares and all sorts of near-junk aviation artifacts. So some part of my soul wants to make... something? out of those used cylinders, gauges, and gyros. :D

Yeah.. I think they're kinda cheesy... But still kinda like some of it... But lean more to the stuff that seems aviation inspired instead of actual panels/parts...

I kinda like "steam punk" too...

I would love to have a couple of ready room chairs from an aircraft carrier out in the hangar. Like everything in this game, they’re expensive. Anyone ever seen plans to make replicas out of wood?
 
I can't imagine wanting to relax in any airliner seat or other industrial chair in my home. Put up with enough of that in real aircraft.
 
I’m mildly tempted to deck out my man cave/office with some airplane furniture but haven’t done so yet. I’d really like to find a nice looking turbofan cut-away model or a real one if I could but the internet has failed me on that so far. As it is, I have a bunch of models and a big wooden (replica) WW1 prop as well as a bunch of random plane and car Knick knacks...

Picked up a 727 copilot seat at Boeing Surplus about 40 years ago. Cost me $25.

Got most of the adjusting stuff to work. Mounted it on a wooden base with a lazy susan swivel and it was my computing chair for about 10 years. Wife made some upholstery to fancy it up a bit.

In reality, it was pretty uncomfortable, though I probably could have put a bigger cushion at the bottom. Eventually, the hydraulics used for adjustment leaked, and put a big stain on the carpet. It's just sitting in the hangar now, gathering dust....

Saw one in an army surplus store back when I was 10... Loved it then, so cool.

Prolly not comfortable...

No, I haven't seen plans... But, I could make some.... With good photos, and a measurement or two....
 
I've got a small chest of drawers in the music room that's sheathed in aluminum and lots of rivets. I assumed the manufacturer thought it looked "aviation."

Yeah, I've seen those, and "cubes" maybe 18" per side with Al and rivets...

These guys make some awesome stuff. They had a reality TV show for awhile and I loved watching it for the art, but like most shows on Discovery, they had to have conflict. They had a friend, Tim Roberts, who was a big, loud guy and seemed to be there only to start fights with the owners. One night he had a heart attack and died and the show was cancelled.

Absolutely there is. Some years ago my then-rigger collected them, as do others. I'd love one on a workstand in the hangar but they're out of my price range.

Aviation-themed doesn't have to be expensive. A friend made these up for us as a gift. We're pretty sure the right one is the spinner from a B-25 engine.

Nope, no Chuck Yeager bobble heads. It’s a Blue Angels vs Thunderbirds foosball table. I do have some Yeager autographs though. :)
