Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge is a FAA designated emergency landing site for commercial flights (as well as for a few million seabirds) but receives one regular scheduled charter flight, a small jet that visits every other Tuesday. The Falcon 50 aircraft brings all arriving passengers and a limited amount of cargo, including fresh fruits and veggies. It leaves an hour later with departing passengers, outgoing mail, and science samples being sent off-island.
During albatross season, the plane arrives at least an hour after sunset to avoid bird strikes. The runway is also checked on multiple occasions that evening and any potentially problematic albatross adults or chicks are moved off of the pavement. Lights after dark are minimized to limit the attraction of Bonin petrels around where the plane is parked near the former NAF hangar
