Seemed the right way to go if you're going to do it... Others may have actual experience...

I had my plane appraised and when I sold it, I got pretty much what it was valued at. It's also a good starting point if you know nothing about the value of the plane. I think they have two types of appraisals, one that is good enough to take to a lender/bank and another one that is more or less a private appraisal.
