This was a fun shoot. Keith reached out to me to get photos. Since I usually shoot out of a Cessna 170, I quickly realized this would be a huge mis-match. I got a friend with a Bonanza to agree to be my photo pilot, but then it turned out to be more of a pain to get the door off than we planned. Then a friend of mine showed up in his Maule, and while still a big difference in speeds, it was faster than the 170. It took us a little while to sync up, but it worked out well!

Nice shots Jack. Man I love the way you capture propellers! Looks great especially the whole plane with the water as a backdrop.

Thanks. This one was a challenge, but it worked out well and was a lot of fun too.
 
When we did an air to air shoot of my plane they used a Cirrus with the baggage door removed. Guy sat in the baggage area to shoot the pics.

Lol, thanks! I took some looking straight down the dam too, but no planes in them. Was still fun leaning out and looking down!

Man I love the way you capture propellers!
2400 rpm is 40 rps. So if the the prop is at 2400 and the shutter speed is 1/40 you'll get a disk. Since usually you need to go with a faster shutter speed, the optimal speed will be determined by the number of blades. You can get interesting effects by allowing partial blade overlap as well.

So I shoot at 1/80 most of the time, but you’re saying that’s because there are two blades? I think I get it, but I figured it out more by trial and error!
 
I love the long nose on that thing - the pilot is damn near midway between the prop and the tail!

Had no choice vs the Maule!
A friend and I flew to a planes-and-pancakes event once and tried to get some pictures. I was in a J-3 Cub and he was in a Super Viking. He had gear and full flaps down and the stall horn going off and still couldn't match my top cruise speed.

Lol! I took photos of a Cub from my 140 took everything I had to slow down enough and it was the only time I felt fast!

Wow Jack.
I’m betting that Malibu will be on a cover soon. I also really like the second photo of the dam. The interplay of the light between the wall of the dam and the swirling water looks like art.

Who knows, it may be in a Maule ;)
