All,
I'm at a weird juncture in life where I am content with where I am (job, housing, etc) and do not wish to change anything about it. I work a 9-5 desk job for a major aviation firm. I love it and would like to make a long career out of it.
But I feel like I can do more. I grew up in a military family and one of my big childhood goals was an appointment to follow my uncle to the Air Force Academy. For a number of reasons, that became unfeasible, but I've always had an interest in service greater than myself.
I found the Air National Guard as a possible solution. I can't commit to the full (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines) service, but I feel a strong calling to serve in some capacity. My state has a few ANG units. I'm wondering if anyone has tried to do what I do - maintain a full-time desk job while serving in the ANG. The commitment looks like a minimum of one weekend/month and two weeks a year, which is easily attainable for me (and my desk job offers military leave).
I don't have a degree but I am working on it - so that rules out trying to shoot for a UPT slot at the moment (unless something has changed). I'm not doing this eyeing a pilot slot or trying to find a way to build flight time, I'd just like to contribute in some way to a cause greater than my own. I want to make a difference, and uniformed service has always been a calling I've felt.
Any of you have experience or words of wisdom?
