Going to get my CFI written this week. Thinking of getting the FOI next.

Unsure if I should get the AGI. What are the benefits of getting the same?

Edit: Long term goal is to be a career instructor. Not interested in going to the airlines.

AGI written is pretty much the same question bank as the FIA.

Same concept between FII and IGI.

Benefit 1 is that when you hold the ground instructor certs, it “freezes” the FOI so you don’t ever have to be tested or examined on the FOI again.

Benefit 2 is if you ever lost your medical and cannot flight instructor again, you can still earn money conducting ground schools.

Even without a medical, a CFI can teach groundschool, and make the appropriate signoffs.

Back when I was instructing more actively, the only requirement I didn’t meet to get the Gold Seal on my CFI was that I lacked the ground instructor certificate. Would have been cool to get, but it never made a difference to me professionally.

It’ll get you your gold seal once you get your numbers up

See, that's what gets me.

What exactly does the AGI do?

Other than gold seal, I can’t think of anything.

I let my CFI lapse in 1996, but opted to get my AGI a few years back just so I could teach ground and sign off.

§ 61.51 Pilot logbooks.

§ 61.105 Aeronautical knowledge.
(a) General. A person who is applying for a private pilot certificate must receive and log ground training from an authorized instructor or complete a home-study course on the aeronautical knowledge areas of paragraph (b) of this section that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought.

§ 61.189 Flight instructor records.

You don’t have to take the written again, but since there is no oral for the AGI, it will be included in your initial flight instructor oral.

I am confused... I have taken the FOI one time and never again. Should have I been retested at some point? Am I missing something? Aside from letting a CFI ticket lapse, under what circumstances would one need to do it again?

Being hit by a bus. That's about all I can come up with.

I so loathed the FOI exam that I got my AGI simply to ensure I'd never have to retake the thing.

Once getting the CFI ticket, AGI is just another card in the wallet. Collect them all!

Haha... Maybe some day I will. By the time I took the FOI it was old hat to me. I had already been involved in adult education for a number of years. I was a Navy trained electronics instructor and had my Master Training Specialist cert as well as several years on the podium. Even today I find myself internally critiquing public speakers... Stop talking to the board! Erase vertically, not horizontally! Yes, there is someone who can answer that question... or my favorite, counting distracting mannerisms. :eek:

Elaborate please?

Haha... When you erase a board horizontally with your back to the room you shake your arse at the students. Some folks can find that quite distracting, depending on the build of your particular arse...

:happydance::drool:

I wish I had gotten it just to have it, I do have my Basic Ground plus CFII/MEI.

I’d want J-Lo to erase horizontally. :drool:

To be fair, certain arse constructions would be interesting in any eraser plane of motion. Above example for instance. :D

I passed the CFI written this morning. Doing the FOI next. Will do the AGI after and as I get closer to the CFI ride.

So I have read this thread in looking for my answer and I'm still not 100% sure on it. Do I HAVE to take FOI to get my AGI/IGI? I just took my IRA and FII tests, so I'm thinking IGI would be a logical one to take now while the information is still fresh in my mind, but trying to figure out if I have to take FOI first.

You are required to have taken the FOI test to get a ground instructor certificate.

§ 61.213 Eligibility requirements.
(a) To be eligible for a ground instructor certificate or rating a personmust:

(1) Be at least 18 years of age;

(2) Be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. If the applicant is unable to meet one of these requirements due to medical reasons, then the Administrator may place such operating limitations on that applicant's ground instructor certificate as are necessary;

(3) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, pass a knowledge test on the fundamentals of instructing to include -

(i) The learning process;

(ii) Elements of effective teaching;

(iii) Student evaluation and testing;

(iv) Course development;

(v) Lesson planning; and

(vi) Classroom training techniques.

(4) Pass a knowledge test on the aeronautical knowledge areas in -

(i) For a basic ground instructor rating §§ 61.97, 61.105, and 61.309;

(ii) For an advanced ground instructor rating §§ 61.97, 61.105, 61.125, 61.155, and 61.309; and

(iii) For an instrument ground instructor rating, § 61.65.

(b) The knowledge test specified in paragraph (a)(3) of this section is not required if the applicant:

(1) Holds a ground instructor certificate or flight instructor certificate issued under this part;

(2) Holds a teacher's certificate issued by a State, county, city, or municipality that authorizes the person to teach at an educational level of the 7th grade or higher; or

(3) Is employed as a teacher at an accredited college or university.

So in order to get a ground instructor, you have to take FOI unless you have a ground instructor... Thanks FAA. (Yes, I understand the different GIs)

Appreciate the help @Clip4.

They saying you don’t have to take the FOI more than once and military instructors can get the FAA CFI without FOI.

Lest it be misunderstood, my comment to the FAA was sarcastic, my comment to you was genuine.

There is really no reason to take the Basic vs taking the Advanced Ground instructor test.
