Can any of you share any thoughts on some intensified PPL finish-up courses? I have 33 hrs logged and can't seem to be able to get any local CFI's to show up to the airport to fly on a consistent basis.

I plan to take a couple weeks vacation time to go through an intensified finish-up course. I'm trying to figure out where and who would be good for it. I'm currently in Southwest VA... but don't mind traveling wherever is needed to finish up. My written exam is out of the way... I just need a good CFI to get me ready for the check-ride.

Thoughts???

Looks like KCPK will do accelerated training

Do you have any experience with them?

I do not. But a quick google search showed that they do accelerated training. You could probably call them, tell them what you have completed so far and they could probably come up with a special syllabus for you.

33hrs, taking a vacation to finish up, sounds like a good idea to me

Check in with Ron Levy to see if the PIC program can help with this.

Oh, good grief!! Does Ron have you on retainer, Mike..or just commission? :D

Jealous are you? You could always jump over here, provide some lessons and see if you could sway my vote to your side...

I spoke with Ron and he gave me the rundown of what PIC does. He was very upfront and genuine.

I'll probably need a little more finish-up than what PIC normally provides for a PPL due to solo work that I need to get out of the way. PIC might be a good fit for an instrument rating... but I'm not at that point yet.

Can you not work something out with the place you are taking lessons now?

Virtually any flight school/FBO that has full-time instructors should be able to work with you to knock it out. Make some calls and figure out who would be able to consistently schedule you for two flights a day.

As far as recommendations in VA- I'm familiar with Dominion Aviation in Chesterfield VA, and Aviation Adventures up in Manassas VA and would recommend either.

I just want to move on so I can get finished up. If I thought I could accomplish that where I was, I wouldn't consider going elsewhere.

What about the guy in Michigan that does the intense Multi? He always sounds good about an intense vacation time line.

Maybe Traverse?

Tom Brady? He doesn't do Private Pilot training. Just Seaplane add-ons and multi-training.

Sun State Aviation, Kissimee, FL - they will get you done. Two flights a day. Set up a DPE. Whatever you need. Arrange accommodations. Get there before the heat of summer.

Have you used them... if so who do you recommend there?

I finished up there. Ask for Randy Longchamps - he is an excellent CFI diagnostician - he will quickly know what it is you need. Tell him Dr Bill sent you.

Am I the only one that feels the urge to nod my head after uncontrollably staring at the Capt. Kirk and Doc McCoy Avatar?

Mike, perhaps you should change your signature line to "Nod your head if ...".

Randy is now at Accelerated Flight Training Academy at last check but I second his recommendation. He was my CFI when he was at Tailwheels outta KLAL.

Tailwheels has the system down pat and Randy was always trying to improve on the system of an accelerated program. You wouldn't go wrong with either of those outfits.

I did just what you are wanting to do. Took a few weeks off, traveled away from home and focused on noting but completing my PPL. Best decision I made. I could not find a local instructor that could or was willing to do it on my timeline. At the time, Tailwheels had the best fit of a program for me and Randy got me prepared well above just the minimum standards.

You will want to find someone that does specialize specifically in the accelerated programs. Just as it takes a certain kind of student that can do well in them, it takes a certain CFI and teaching style as opposed to the few hours a week mentality.

I might be able to help you out, but before I can answer that, which parts of 61.109(a) have you not completed yet?:

(a) For an airplane single-engine rating. Except as provided in paragraph (k) of this section, a person who applies for a private pilot certificate with an airplane category and single-engine class rating must log at least 40 hours of flight time that includes at least 20 hours of flight training from an authorized instructor and 10 hours of solo flight training in the areas of operation listed in §61.107(b)(1) of this part, and the training must include at least—

(1) 3 hours of cross-country flight training in a single-engine airplane;

(2) Except as provided in §61.110 of this part, 3 hours of night flight training in a single-engine airplane that includes—

(i) One cross-country flight of over 100 nautical miles total distance; and

(ii) 10 takeoffs and 10 landings to a full stop (with each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern) at an airport.

(3) 3 hours of flight training in a single-engine airplane on the control and maneuvering of an airplane solely by reference to instruments, including straight and level flight, constant airspeed climbs and descents, turns to a heading, recovery from unusual flight attitudes, radio communications, and the use of navigation systems/facilities and radar services appropriate to instrument flight;

(4) 3 hours of flight training with an authorized instructor in a single-engine airplane in preparation for the practical test, which must have been performed within the preceding 2 calendar months from the month of the test; and

(5) 10 hours of solo flight time in a single-engine airplane, consisting of at least—

(i) 5 hours of solo cross-country time;

(ii) One solo cross country flight of 150 nautical miles total distance, with full-stop landings at three points, and one segment of the flight consisting of a straight-line distance of more than 50 nautical miles between the takeoff and landing locations; and

(iii) Three takeoffs and three landings to a full stop (with each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern) at an airport with an operating control tower.
