A friend is thinking of purchasing an AA-1A. The plane is rough. Does anyone have an idea of the cost to strip and repaint an AA-1 here in the PA area. Also, any recommendations on a shop?

There is Lancaster Aero at Smoketown S37 near LNS. It has been there a while. What little I’ve heard of it has been good. I only know one first hand paint job but they were pleased. The runway is 2700 feet so it might be a challenge for the Grumman:D:D

I just did my annual there. I will go back for more, and if I ever need paint, they'll do that too.

You can call Cliff Weaver at Circle W Restorations, PA72. PA72 is a beautifully maintained grass strip west of York, PA. Cliff did my Sundowner 2 years ago. His work is immaculate, and price is reasonable.

Wherever you go, make sure they know how to strip and paint Grummans - it's not like any other spam can. The service manual outlines the procedure to avoid getting the stripping chemical into the bonded areas.

You might check with the Grumman Gang or AYA for paint shops.

Yes. I was at Circle W when Cliff was stripping a Grumman. He told me about what he had to do to keep from debonding the wing.

We spent $12,000 to repaint our AA-5 here in Florida. Proper strip and paint. They did a great job. I hope that is a reasonable price ceiling for the shops up there.

Cliff's work was on the cover of Aviation Consumer, with a 4 page article inside.
