They are now wrapping the files you desire to download into their own installers that deliver advertising and offer to install crapware on your system (instead of delivering the desired program installer directly).

If you have the misfortune to want to get files from download.com, make sure you "opt out" and don't install the crapware that's offered.

More here.

BTW, some of the crapware that may be offered is very hard to remove, and has been classified by some sites as malware.

How'd that concept work out for real player? They must be tanking and trying to do a last minute money grab before the ship sinks. download.com, haven't used it in 10 years...

A CNET site. Used to be good. I liked CNET back when they first started. CNET TV was one of the few "tech only" shows. Myles O'Brien had another on CNN years ago as well.

MALWARE: Anything on your system you didn't want. I would include browser toolbars that come along with some piece of software you might have wanted. I would include anything Microsoft but I sort of need windows somthing.

Good heads up.

I downloaded something from them recently but the ZIP file just didn't look right to me so I didn't install it.

Yeah, this hit the news a couple of weeks ago. Apparently C|Net's business model is failing... which isn't much of a surprise.

I love Brian Cooley's Car Tech -- I hope if C|Net barfs, he lands on his feet somewhere. Deep sarcasm, a decent knowledge of the cars themselves, and knowing whether or not a particular tech make the vehicle more interesting/useful... makes for good watchin'.
