A fascinating story about our first Emperor.

Emperor Norton I is fairly well known around San Francisco.

He's one of the rather, umm, colorful figures in the past.

There is at present a half-hearted attempt to rename the Bay Bridge after him, as one of his "proclamations" ordered the construction of a suspension bridge pretty close to the bridge route adopted 50 years later.

San Francisco was, by all accounts, a wild place in the 1860s.

Another good read from the period is the life of James Lick. Especially where he's buried and why.

Your right, I just looked him up. The Emperor reminds me of the old Laguna Beach greeter back in the 60s, the whole town loved him.

If someone tried something like that today, Homeland Security would have him either locked away or killed. Most likely both.

You're kidding, right?

Local nutcases can be found sleeping on the streets of almost any big city, and there is no wholesale government slaughter nor roundup going on.

Memphis has Prince Mongo. Though he doesn't sleep on the streets. He's well off and owns a castle. :D
