Occupation? Currently Robotics Lab Instructor at a small private university. Used to do powertrain control systems and diagnostics at one of the larger auto companies.

How Many Hours You Have/Types of Airplanes You've Flown? Couple hundred or so - many were back in the '70s. Cessna 120, Champ, T-18, Beech Sport, Cessna 150s, Taylorcraft, Merlin GT (current ride - a rag and tube LSA taildragger).

Future Plans - Make it to my next birthday, fly more (I'm finally done with the last construction project so I might even have some time), do some upgrades to the airplane. Maybe even retire some day. Maybe.

Miscellaneous:I race sailboats during the summer.

Age? 32. I think.

Occupation? Own an aircraft procurement/brokerage company, been doing that 4+ years, so far so good. Part time as a CFI and enjoy the heck out of it.

How Many Hours You Have/Types of Airplanes You've Flown? Around 500. ASEL (like 90% of the time), ASES, Helicopters, Gliders. Only 48 hours in 172s of all years and models :D

Future Plans (Doesn't have to be aviation related). Fly more. Eventually fly commercially part time, sell things part time.

Miscellaneous: I have a head full of random aviation facts :) From the asymmetric airfoil used on the Bf-109 vertical stabilizer and the intended use of the crowbar attached to the Spitfire door to Yak-52 "pizza slices" on the lower wing surface around spar attachment to when C182 got wet wing and lost the ability to work on mogas (unrelated) etc :)

Why? Just kidding. It's a tough profession with long hours but can be fun. My undergrad was in Economics as well. Don't know what it's like in CA, but in IL you need 150 hours to take the CPA exam which means most likely for younger college students a Masters degree. Good luck in the future.

The University of California (for the most part) runs on a quarter system and the Department of Consumer Affairs requires 225 quarter units to be CPA eligible. Over here the firms seem to still like hiring people with Bachelor's degrees (lower pay possibly?), so most people cram a bunch of easy peasy community college business courses the summer after senior year to meet the requirements.

Don't get me wrong, I really, really enjoy accounting, but some of this stuff is pure madness. I like my classes and I love the thought of working in the industry but some of these requirements seem abstract and unnecessary. I've got a few more years before I'm ready to graduate, but just looking at the accounting requirements flow chart makes me nauseous.

Gotta love it!

I was at one of the big 4 in SF for 20 years and a partner for 10 of those. Each year I spent a fair amount of the fall doing on-campus recruiting. The reason the firms like bachelors is because of the war for talent. Heck, we'd sign 'em up in high school if we could!

Stick with it and enjoy college! I enjoyed learning about business (still do), and there is not much better way to get a front row seat than as an entry level financial auditor.

Did you ever work at One Bush? Or maybe they were gone by then. I had a college job as a gofer/mail room/file room worker. I remember having to file tax code revisions which were just like Jepp revisions only worse.

Ha! Good training for corporate aviation! :)

No, I was at 50 Fremont. Can't remember who was at One Bush. They are all pretty much south of market now. The other thing that you'd probably be surprised by is that all the big offices are gone. In most cases, it's an open floor plan with shared offices and only partners with assigned/shared offices.

Hiring younger people is the norm in the big firms. You will be worked to death....younger folks have better stamina and can be molded. But at Deloitte in the 80's I was hired with a MBA. They were actually hiring folks in their mid 20's to early 30's then. Being a CPA in public can be rewarding and lots of fun. At a big firm, you are exposed to really interesting companies, but they will want you to specialize. At mid size or small CPA firms, you do a wide range of assignments. My advice (based on my track) is to seek employment in a larger firm, then eventually move to a smaller firm. I feel I have been blessed. I am envious of you guys, like my 21 yo son, who know what you want to do at a young age. I didn't figure it out until I was 27.
