2014 6Y9 Fly-in

Yeah, I remember Hoppy's is in the next town over to the west and that one that burned down was across the road (east) from Ma's Kitchen (?). I remember eating there a time or two.

Actually, one of my fondest memories of 6Y9 was pulling up in front of Trail's End on the ATV's one night to eat dinner. We shut the machines down, looked at the still-slightly-above-the-horizon sun, I said "y'know, we could go flying again." We looked at each other, Ed said "Let's go" and peeled out, and five minutes later we were in the air. Briefing? Hah, the sky is blue and they probably haven't had a TFR there ever. Preflight? Well, we were just flying earlier. It was the shortest time from idea to wheels up I've ever had, and the air was smooth and clear and the flight awesome. (Weren't you in the right seat of 71G on that flight?) Ahhhh. :)

Ha. Very well could have been - that sounds like something I would have been willing to do. :)

Looks like this year we will have POA meets AOPA meets RAF
Bryan Budds, AOPA regional rep will be there and if the weather holds John and Trisha McKenna President and Adm. Director of the RAF(Recreational Aviation Foundation.
John and Trisha will be flying their C-185 from Bozeman MT.
Please come and meet them all and bring your questions, comments and suggestions.

Very cool news! Hopefully the 6Y9 gem will get some of the recognition that it deserves. It sounds like a spot that would be right up RAF's alley, too.

Very sad to hear that. That evening was the epitome of why small towns are awesome. Was that the same gentleman that we visited his cabin waaay out in the woods on the 4-wheelers one afternoon? There are so many friendly folks up there, I can't keep them all straight!

The cabin waaaay out in the woods is Brad's aunt & uncle. The one who picked you guys up lives right--I mean-- lived right around the corner from us....you would have walked/driven by their place if you took the back way to and from the airport and not the main hwy.

I will never forget the entrance into Hoppy's when the girls and Grant announced that the hay wagon broke. I thought everyone was joking and I wasn't going to fall for that! Were you one of the ones that road on the tractor w/ Brad the rest of the way?

"Every time I park my hay wagon in Sidnaw they tow the ****!" :)

I was one of the ones picked up by the now deceased local (again, condolences. Getting old sucks, though it beats the alternative. I lost two people last year and am loosing a third this year).

The one year I successfully made the trip everyone came to your cabin Sunday for brunch around a campfire, which was why I was thinking about campfire cooking. If that doesn't happen anymore I can certainly live without.

I think you're going to enjoy some of the "improvements" of 6Y9 and the "new digs" :)

Sorry to hear about your friends, too. Yes getting old isn't always kind....

It's a bit early yet, but any tricks to get the weather to cooperate? Like if you plan to drive the weather is usually great for flying. It's not the best this weekend, so maybe that will help the odds.

It's Michigan and you want to predict the weather?:D

The trick is to NOT talk about the weather in advance...

We are really looking forward to it again this year. We are VFR only, so fingers crossed. We have to be out of there Sunday morning early because we are going to a wedding in Oshkosh. Suggestions on what to bring for the brunch on Friday? We are thinking possibly jambalaya.

I've already performed the most powerful sympathetic magic imaginable. I am traveling by ground transportation. The weather will be perfect.

It sounds like Tim has one cabin and we have the other. If someone needs to not be in a tent (Kent & Kelsey? Michael? Bryan?) the cabins actually have two bedrooms in them and we can share. We've done that with Lynn before.

We can come up Friday night and share Saturday breakfast/brunch before departing for Mackinaw.

Anybody gonna be there to join us?

So far the weather is trending 'cooperative', still some time to firm up. I can't get there until noon or so on Sat, but it sounds like folks will be there with the welcome mat ready.

My plan is to be on the UP by Friday afternoon, though I might bunk up Friday night with Gary.

Some are coming in on Thurs. Some on Friday. Friday will be the pot luck-same evening gathering as last year. Saturday is when we have the bbq lunch on the field and half the town shows up.

So to answer your question, yes. You won't be alone.;)

Great! I thought you wouldn't be there until Sunday and we were going to miss you both!

He wasn't old, just a little older than I , he was 68:wink2:. He worked for 20 plus years at a plant that made ceiling tiles with asbestos in them in L'Anse Mi.. Over the last 8 or 9 years he basically slowly suffocated to death with lots of related problems associated with the condition.
No way to go for a very ,very good man and friend. I can't even imagine that last ambulance ride to the hospital.

Again, I cannot give sufficient condolences. Sucks dying because of what you wound up doing for a living, but it is an occupational hazard of having an occupation. I am half convinced one of pals is dying because of his avocation. Get me drunk enough and I might even talk about it. Might.

I hope assembled company will forgive my selfishness, I'll figure out what to do Friday once I get up to the UP. Haven't done a ride like this quite a few years. Never did one on such a capable machine, though. Still, we'll see what kind of shape I'm in. I just feel badly that I've no good munchies to bring.

We'll just have to see what shape I'm in once I get to the UP. I have two very very nice invites, and I want to visit both if possible. Gary is a good guy, and I want to visit him at his place, but with luck I'll also be able to hit 6Y9 Friday evening to attend the festivities, in which case we might have some slightly interesting sleeping arrangements. Then again, I plan on bringing a tent, so if anyone is in any way uncomfortable there is sufficient recourse. And I'll have the Goldwing, so some degree of local transportation will be available should I stay sober.

I was looking through the pictures from 2009 (the last year we were able to attend) and man do I miss that place! /QUOTE]

I think that was last and only year we were there. I, too, am looking forward to the day that we can make it back there...not this year...too many other trips and stuff going on...Guam, Belgium, Hawaii, Bejing, Hong Kong...:yesnod:

You can stop by my place on the way for a break or the night or whatever. Marquette is directly on the way to 6Y9 for anybody who arrives in Upper Michigan via the bridge. I'm only about a mile off US 41/28.

Sigh... I'm out. Kelsey's grandmother died yesterday evening, so we're going to be flying to a funeral instead of a fly-in. :(

Next year...

Aw, shoot, Kent ... I'm sorry to hear that.
Y'all take care
