They probably billed him for the repairs to the flight instructor. He was fine when you took him out!I wonder whether the school billed him for the instructor in addition to the plane rental...
Wow. Talk about throwing someone in the lake to teach'em how to swim! Much respect to the student, the tower, the flight instructor in the tower, and the student's wife. Remarkable story.
I was going to quote 91.3(b), but it looks like the student didn't meet the definition of "pilot in command" in FAR 1.1. I guess this is one of those situations where he just had to recognize that his goal was to live long enough to attend the hearing. The student is in violation of the law in 61.87 and should be punished

OK fine, but then ATC should be prosecuted for giving flight instruction without a license. lolI did not know that FAA regulations applied in Australia.
Also as stated earlier, instructor was alive. Not a flight loggable flight.

What if ATC was also a CFI ??
I know for a fact if that had been me, the airplane would not be reusable.
Doesn't every ATC need at least a PPL?What if ATC was also a CFI ??
NoDoesn't every ATC need at least a PPL?
The story was on TV tonight with both the student and his instructor.
