Quite insensitive by the media. Pilot's relatives have a legitimate beef.

Most recent news article I saw said the pilot, working on an advance rating, rented the a/c for a night flight. Rental agreement says any night flight needs a second pilot - apparently because of the worry about spatial disorientation over that part of the country. Pilot took it out solo.
 
Sketchy that it took the flight school 4 days to report him missing. Also sketchy was the media broadcasting pictures of the pilot being eaten. His family will never forget that image. The alligator was just doing what alligators do, but the media should be ashamed of themselves for showing that.
