Today we are celebrating 100 years of licensed women pilots. On march 8, 1910 Raymonde de Laroche, a French balloonist, became the first woman ever to earn a pilots license.:blowingkisses:

Who was the first American women pilot?

Quite a few years ago I read a story about a lady here in Maine who was living in a home for the elderly. Re her approaching 100th birthday she was asked what she would like to have. "I want to go for an airplane flight," she told the surprised caregivers. Then they learned that she was one of the early women pilots, and the first woman pilot in Maine to be awarded a Commercial rating, after which she flew U.S. Mail. She had also met Amelia Earhart several times. A pilot from the Augusta area stepped up to the plate and took her on her birthday flight.

I was all set to do an interview with her but the "home" called me and said that a virus had spread within the facility and that outside visitation had been closed until eradication of the virus. The aged aviator died not long after, but not from the virus.
I've not been able to locate further information -- can't remember her name.

Closer to where I live is the basis of this story. Its author, Jim McCarthy, used to be the editor of The Times Record, Brunswick.
