Balancing Moderation for a Thriving Community

Getting rid of the politics allowed forum was the beginning of the end of my regular participation at POA. I realize it’s difficult to moderate and a challenge to keep politics confined to certain areas of a forum. At the same time, you don’t have a real community if you completely ban...

Pilot arrested for DUI blows .00

Honestly not a terrible strategy. That he got someone to bite on the first try is telling. When I was 23 I had an undercover cops try to nail me for underage drinking. I gave them my name, address, and my ID as requested, and when they got pushy I said I was invoking my right to remain silent...

Tower at KHND nearly did me in yesterday

Controllers don't know your aircraft, performance and what winds you can take off and land in. What they will do is start calling out current winds over the tower frequency. When you start hearing that, take notice and make sure you can accept a takeoff or landing clearance. If you can't, tell...

1 faa failure and two 121 failures, how to move forward

First off congrats to the OP for persevering. Going through indoc, sims and all that stuff at two different companies, and making it happen is something you should be proud of. If anything shows you are dedicated. Get some flight time and successful recurrent training behind you and no major...

    Charlotte, NC

Good luck! I'm sure you will enjoy sim training. A friend of mine was a sim instructor there and had good things to say about the department. I finished training at PSA early this year in CLT. Right now DCA based but hoping to get to CLT early 2023.

Person jumps from aircraft landing at RDU

    Well said.

Person jumps from aircraft landing at RDU

FWIW I recognize the controller’s voice on the RDU tower audio. Sounds real to me. Latest crackpot theory I heard is that the surviving pilot’s injuries were from trying to keep the other guy from leaving his seat.

PC 12 Down off of NC Coast

Thanks Dave! Never left, just don't check in as often. I was a more prolific poster when I was day dreaming about aviation at my desk when I had a 9-5 job. I went full-time pilot in 2019 and haven't been on here as much. At a 121 regional now.

    How High Do You Get?

I would try to keep it at 9000' or less. Unpressurized with no oxygen above that really wears you out after 2-3 hours. That said I have been up to 12.5 a few times for various reasons including staying above the clouds and riding a very strong tailwind. I got a C150 up to 11,500 once. Winter...

PC 12 Down off of NC Coast

It was about 65 feet underwater so that may have been difficult. Not sure how literal they are with that phrase..

UND Plane down in ND - 1 fatality

A position I find myself in with alarming regularity these days.

UND Plane down in ND - 1 fatality

Based on my own personal observations, people who are contemplating suicide don't get magically cured from a temporary illness. Can it be successfully managed with treatment, yes. For most this is a lifelong struggle. That's not to say that people with this issue should be disqualified from...

My [older] kids as STUDENT pilots in my personal C-172?

That's somewhat true however I doubt any serious buyer would be turned off by two people learning to fly in a 172. They suffer decades of abuse at the hands of flight schools. A savvy owner letting his kids learn to fly with a good CFI would not put many miles at all on that 172 relatively speaking.

    I hate my January annuals

Honestly this is the first I've heard of any issues. I'm also not really in the loop with what goes on w/ maintenance. I volunteered to pick a 152 engine up from their shop a few months ago, so we were using them as of then.

    I hate my January annuals

Try Triad aviation. Our flying club uses them for overhauls and we have 13 aircraft that fly 400-800 hrs/yr each. They turn ours around quick, however we are something of a regular customer. http://www.hhtriad.com/engine

First flight with my wife and we had an emergency landing

You handled the situation well. You didn't do anything impulsively to make the situation worse, just thought through the problem. Yes you should have figured out how to reset the alternator as part of training, but mistakes are made. I understand flying old aircraft with odd systems and...
