    DOGE and the FAA

^^^ This One of my favorite Musk quotes is where he defines the most common mistake an engineer makes as optimizing an unneeded process. Sure, eliminating a step entirely might add some risk, but you save a lot of time and expense with a little risk tolerance. Especially when the data set...

    Thank You for Your Service

Some people say it sincerely and that's nice. Many say it because it's rote. That kinda annoys me. I do like the discounts though.

    Lien Issue

My experience with AIC is the same. All but one of my planes was a project plane and I've had some interesting title drama. They are really good at things like clearing clouded titles and insuring them if it's special. Shockingly fast and affordable too. I've no experience with the other...

    DOGE and the FAA

80% is his stated number. But he also famously shut down redundant data centers, excess facility costs, moved to a no state tax state, and more. But fair, it's his numbers vs the NY Times numbers. Hard to pick sides in a private company.

    DOGE and the FAA

WDD is right. The Class 3 for the initial cohort was over 2 decades ago (7/2006 minus 3 or 5 years). Sport Pilot has been in place a couple decades too. The only study I've ever seen published is clear, no benefit.

    DOGE and the FAA

Sure, Twitter lost 80% of revenue (advertising) but he cut costs 80% too, as a business guy, that's a wash. Number of users and posts is setting records. I'm not sure what metrics are relevant but the Owners are satisfied with where it is at. Time will tell if he has an impact, but betting...

    DOGE and the FAA

I don't think the real doctors ever get hung up over a 40-year old traffic offense or a childhood prescription for a specific drug . Same with tests and diagnoses that are possible disqualifiers for FAA medicals. A real doctor doing an actual exam could use the same professional judgement that...

    DOGE and the FAA

Can you specifically articulate what in a 3rd class exam a normal physician can't do?

    DOGE and the FAA

Nothing in the law say's the SI needs to be done by a Government Doctor. The FAA could make something like CACI but allow state licensed physicians to do them.

    It's official... BasicMed expanded

    Progress is possible! Yeah!

    DOGE and the FAA

So I'm an optimist about this process. Some of the problem programs are by law and will require more work to repeal, but many, many are administrative and will be relatively easy to remove. For example, the law established BasicMed and requires a 3rd class medical, but doesn't define 3rd class...

Balancing Moderation for a Thriving Community

I think the mods do a good job of getting it "about right" which is all you can ask. There are fragile feelings on each side and they do a good job of keeping it on the centerline. Personally, I'd like less moderation. If a post annoys me i just hit the next button and not engage with the...

    KSPG near Tampa Question

All I have to add is that the Tampa controllers are easy to work with and some of the best around.

Deferred Medical Review Time (Alcohol Related)

I agree, but to be clear, it's not the Law or Rules. It's a policy decision by CAMI.

    Passed my BasicMed exam- butt---

No issue with BasicMed, at all. It’s not one of the 3 conditions requiring an SI. You do need to decide if you are safe to fly. I went through the process way back in 2008. There are a lot more treatment options these days.

    Medical Wait Time!

Mostly True. In 2019 there were 664,565 and in 2023 there were 806,970 pilots. Specific details from the FAA are here. Almost all the growth is in Student Pilots so it's fair to say it is a bunch more work for CAMI since none of them are eligible for Basic Med yet. The growth in student...

    Lilium Runs Out of Money

Not VTOL, But I've seen the electric Pipistrel, I think it will work sooner rather than later. Batteries need to get an order of magnitude cheaper and lighter but that's gonna happen. Not surprised they ran out of money though. Breakthru technologies are expensive.

    Help

At least around here, the FBO's are always looking for people work the ramp/fuel/etc. Pay ain't great but it will be a job at the airport doing airplane things. If you have any mechanical skills see if the shop needs a helper. no different than any professional field, if you want to work in...

    Missing Registration for Deceased

I don't have anything to add on the legal or tax issues. I'd just add that unlike many of the people at the FAA, The Aircraft Registry folks are easy to get on the phone and IME they are quite competent and helpful. Bureaucratic sticklers for sure, but they are helpful and seem to really care...

What plane would you buy in my situation?

You're thinking right. A 182 or Dakota will be great. Pretty simple, common, and insurable. Of course.....Comanche if you don't mind a first year insurance heart attack.
