What's wrong with a dutch roll in a passenger jet?

One thing worth mentioning, in the case of yaw damper failure, the rear section is in effect "the tail end of the whip" severe enough to cause injuries to those in the cabin.

Am I too big to be a CFI?

I'm a CFI, 6' 5" and 250 lbs give or take, and although it's a squeeze in a C150, it's doable (I was able to squeeze into a U-2 for half a day after all). I make sure the seat is all the way back (obviously) and position myself as far into the rear right corner as possible (no slouching...

    Wright Patt Air Force museum

@Jim K @Pinecone @flyingron @frfly172 @X3 Skier @Martin Pauly , Thanks to all for the excellent responses! Just the inside info I needed to know regarding the airports and transportation options. Right now, the plan is to depart in the early AM, get to the museum for as long as we can the first...

    Wright Patt Air Force museum

I know this is kind of a zombie thread, but I couldn't find anything more recent. I'm planning a 2-day trip with my 15 year-old aspiring-pilot son and my wife to visit the US Air Force Museum in our (rental) 172M from Maryland, some time in the early summer of next year. Has anyone visited...

New CFI (Me) and my Son

@SoarPaso, much appreciated! It's a matter of finding availability, but I'm keeping that in mind.

If you had 3 months to travel in your plane, where would you go?

If you happen to pass through the Texas Hill Country, pay a visit to Fredericksburg (T82) and spend the night in the Hangar Hotel, a step into a time machine with all the accommodations to match. Sometimes T82 has warbird fly-ins and the town (founded by Germans in the mid-1800s) is full of...

Operations Threshold to Establish a Tower

Perfect, just what I was looking for. So it's not just the traffic count, but a host of other factors, not surprisingly.

Do airline crews tell you their names anymore?

I always did; when the pandemic was beginning and there were only five or so pax in the cabin, I took my iPad with me and gave them a personal briefing, route, weather rides, etc.

Operations Threshold to Establish a Tower

East Hampton Airport, formerly KHTO, now KJPX. Here's a summary; again a towered airport with a low traffic count.

Operations Threshold to Establish a Tower

Good point, HEF is within the DC SFRA, the only difference might be that any Class D airspace around GAI would overlap into the FRZ, but that might not make much difference. Interesting, since LOT estimates 285 operations per day, well above others that have a tower.

Operations Threshold to Establish a Tower

A lot of great points mentioned here; I hadn't really considered the impact of a Class D airspace zone deep within the SFRA and how all that would interact. Maybe it's one of those "be careful what you ask for" scenarios. But as of this morning I was up to do some pattern work elsewhere but had...

    Canada wildfire smoke and GA

Flew this morning from GAI (north of DC); the plan was to do some pattern work at FDK. GAI was 5 miles in haze, while at the time FDK was reporting 3 miles. By the time we were in the proximity of FDK, they had dropped back down to 2 1/2 in haze. We considered some airwork but the horizon wasn’t...

Operations Threshold to Establish a Tower

Lately I've been flying a lot out of Montgomery County Airpark (GAI) north of DC and deal with a lot of traffic each time; there are four flight schools, a CAP Wing, a Coast Guard element, and over 155 based aircraft. As of 2022, estimates put total operations at GAI close to 80,000 (a 12%...

New CFI (Me) and my Son

Very encouraging! I have had him fly around the pattern (usually with verbal prompts) and I take over on the base leg and he's doing pretty well, even making the radio calls. There's no rush, just taking it slow and having fun when we can. Exactly! And for now that is the game plan, he's just...

    John Grisham and General Aviation

@TCABM , @Greg Bockelman , @RussR , and @SFDukie , thanks for the info! A few more ideas for my summer reading program, I'll be sure to research all of these. I have to wonder if Grisham incorporated aviation into more of his many novels or was I just lucky in hitting the only ones? I've read...

    John Grisham and General Aviation

In the last few years I got into reading several of John Grisham's novels when a common thread began to reveal itself... that he must be a pilot (and sure enough, he is in the FAA database as a PP, ASEL/AMEL) and his books incorporate some aspect of general aviation flying. The ones I've come...

@Pinecone, @Aye Effaar, @LanceS, @Arbiter419, @WDD, all fantastic comments and suggestions, very encouraging, helpful, and much appreciated! I have considered approaching the flight school, and as WDD says, I know I need some guidance on instructing in the Cessna, and your suggestion makes...
