    KSPG near Tampa Question

Second this. I am based at KSRQ, and fly the KTPA bravo at least weekly. I am proud to say that my "home" bravo is my favorite bravo in the country. I might be a little biased, but seriously, they are awesome. Whoever mentioned getting "vectored all over" is not my experience, whether I'm IFR...

Spend my money - which autopilot?

Thanks. I think I stumbled onto that site sometime in the past when I was troubleshooting the old Century on a previous plane. Very good info for those who want to try to salvage their Century. I may try some of the easier fixes on that site and that people here have suggested (particular thanks...

Spend my money - which autopilot?

The G3X's age also underscores the general concept of obsolescence. I have a panel that, aside from the AP, was recut and fitted with a modern avionics suite in 2018. The Aspen got the Max update less than three years ago. My panel situation is not comparable to someone who is planning an...

Spend my money - which autopilot?

Prior to today, I would have thought you were 100% correct. That had me somewhat favoring option 4 even though I'd much rather have the GFC500 if money were no object. However, this morning, Sarasota Avionics gave me a formal quote of $47,212.50 (yep, they felt the need to get that last 50 cents...

Spend my money - which autopilot?

I'm not opposed to it. I just didn't think the price difference would be significant enough to merit considering the G3X over the newer piece of tech. The bulk of the cost is going to be the installation, which will require panel modification or might even mean cutting a new panel entirely. If I...

Spend my money - which autopilot?

You would take GI-275s over the Aspen?

Spend my money - which autopilot?

I have a Piper Turbo Arrow III (PA-28R-201T) that needs an autopilot. The current panel is an Aspen Pro Max PFD, G5 backup AI, GTN 750, GTX 345, an old King backup NAV2, an actual working King DME, and a JPI 900. The current autopilot situation is clunky and now broken. It has an STEC 30...

    Florida in Crosshairs Again…. Milton

Agree in general, and that surely happened with Milton to some extent... but in highly atypical fashion for a tropical system, it spawned numerous violent long-tracked wedges. A lot of scenes on Wednesday resembled something you'd expect to see out of Oklahoma in May.

    Florida in Crosshairs Again…. Milton

Ugh, those pictures hurt to look at. My home drome is KSRQ. I can't get hull coverage due to a prior accident (100% mechanical/not pilot error, but insurance companies say a claim is a claim and call back in 24 months). Therefore, I couldn't take a chance on leaving my plane in the community...

    Mid-air, KMEV Minden-Tahoe

This is true. We don't know anything definitive, it's all speculation at this point. Hopefully, the avionics cluster didn't get completely torched and the NTSB will be able to ascertain the settings on the transponder. Unfortunately, the pilot's track record does raise suspicion for non-use though.

    Mid-air, KMEV Minden-Tahoe

Yet another example of someone dying needlessly due to unwillingness to use technological advances that make flying safer. It is fortuitous that the two people who did not share his hazardous attitude didn't have to die that day. Unfortunately, this distrust of tech and longing for the "good...

    GI275 question

Another vote that it is much more likely the GI-275 just needs to be recalibrated/have the offset readjusted. A true aerodynamic problem that requires you to be 5° nose down in trimmed level flight would manifest other aircraft control issues that should be pretty obvious, not to mention that...

    Oxygen Script?

I'm a physician and wrote myself an O2 rx. I rarely use it. Home base for me is on the Gulf Coast, and there are scuba shops everywhere. It is way less of a pain to take my O2 bottles to a scuba shop, tell them I'm a pilot and need pure O2. Most of them are happy to fill for their usual tank...

Bill Anders, Apollo 8 astronaut, crashes in Puget Sound

Meh. The man had nothing left to prove. Going out this way takes nothing away from his accomplishments in life. Maybe he went out on an unfortunate mental lapse, or maybe... he didn't. That means he went out doing something he loved at the least, and maybe, possibly, went out on his own terms...

    Treat oil leaks seriously

Your point is well taken. This touches on the fiduciary duty, per se, of the skilled professional. One ultimately has to trust that the people hired to accomplish complex tasks know what they are doing. Still, blind faith in someone else's work is not a strategy. We sump our fuel everytime a...

    Treat oil leaks seriously

This thread started with an A&P fessing up to an instance of complacency, but there is an important second side to this story that hasn't been directly discussed - the pilots. They elected to take a plane up even after having suspicion of an issue. They did so because they thought, "ok, an A&P...

Plane purchases, gifts, and the tax man

Ahh, funding source and ownership intent. JimBob is using 100% his own funds for the purchase, but had intended to let Cleetus have full and free use of the plane bc Cleetus had extended him the same courtesy with his boat. JimBob realizes and accepts that by gifting the plane to Cleetus, he...

Plane purchases, gifts, and the tax man

It's JimBob, get it right! :fingerwag: And you are correct, JimBob is an impatient man. He and Cleetus were excited about not having to drive 4+ hours to get to the plane for the next six months. Although not previously mentioned in this thread, the six month strategy is something JimBob and...
