Compared to what panels look like that were done with a punch? Apparently units made that way didn't have issues. Out of round and a little flaw to one side. I could see where you would get a stress crack... are these holes used as is or do they get a reaming? I hate it for all involved.

I'd say the student was trusting the CFIs judgement. Believe I heard the CFI had 300 hours total time. Certainly enough time to know you don't fly near, much less into a thunderstorm.

My CFI started each flight lesson the same way, in the pilots briefing room, we checked Notams, TFRs, and weather..kinda think those things are in the rules...

Sure are, I keep an "expired" one in the pouch behind the seat with " not for navigation" wrote on it. About an hour from home last week I lost GPS ...the magic magenta line went away....I knew the headings I needed to finish the flight but did remind me I might need to review old school...
