NTSB Comments on Ethiopian 737 MAX investigation

Should be, yes. The problem is when you are flying passengers for a living those people are expecting the smoothest ride possible and the culture creases professional pilots that turn the autopilot on anytime the limitations allow it and ride the autothrottles from run up power to touchdown...

NTSB Comments on Ethiopian 737 MAX investigation

It’s not really correcting for “pilot errors”. It’s making the new plane fly more like the older planes so the FAA doesn’t require a new type rating which would create all sorts of problems for operators which operate both the older and newer aircraft and negate much of the benefit of the 737...

NTSB Comments on Ethiopian 737 MAX investigation

What I got out of everything I’ve read on the two accidents is both could have been prevented by using electric trim to correct for the MCAS pitch down until they could disable the pitch trim. IIRC the Lion Air crash was being flown by a FO that was put in the 737 not long after his first solo...

    Icing is a b****

That’s a good representation of what can happen in icing and I’ve seen worse. The car type defroster that many light aircraft have might get you a porthole the size of a pie plate to see out of if you are lucky. That alone will ruin your day as even if you get out of the clouds that windshield...

    Glideslope Intercept Altitude

I’m not even 100% sure it was an AC, but there was published guidance on this issue before they added the note to the AIM. This goes back a few years so I don’t remember the reference. This problem can be very insidious in some situations because on one day you might come down on the GS without...

    Glideslope Intercept Altitude

Note 2 was added because pilots were getting deviations for intercepting the GS early and not honoring mandatory altitudes on step down fixes. Prior to note 2 being published in the AIM there was an AC on this issue which better explained the problem, but it has to do with separation...

    IFR Approach Debate

The rules for RNAV are a bit different. For other approaches intercept angles while being vectored are generally 30 degrees or less. The reference is in FAA order 7110.65. https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/atpubs/atc_html/chap5_section_9.html

    My GoPro Hero setup

The stud on the battery isn’t long enough so I just put some loctite on it. Even if the nut came off the battery would still be held by the hose clamp. It holds it so tight the nut isn’t even necessary.

    My GoPro Hero setup

I have one of those for my Hero 7. AFAIK they don’t make them for anything past 7. The added wind resistance makes metal mounts a must have. It’s been a while since I’ve used it, but I don’t think I got anywhere near the battery life claimed, but it could have been due to the setup I was...

    My GoPro Hero setup

I haven’t tried it on the plane yet, but I don’t think the results will be something I’m interested in. I have tried it just on the camera with the Max lens and it works as advertised. The horizon stays level even if you rotate the camera to extreme angles. I just had little interest in trying...

    My GoPro Hero setup

The problem I have found is when you turn on wireless the battery drain isn’t that much different than having the camera on without wireless. YMMV.

    New iPad Mini just announced.

Be that as it may the mini 4 still runs ForeFlight Pro and Jepp plates just fine. Apple and ForeFlight continued to support the mini 1 for a very long time and even when Apple stopped providing new IOS updates it still worked with ForeFlight although new features were unavailable. I always...

    New iPad Mini just announced.

I ordered mine on the first day and it will arrive on the 24th. For veterans, don’t forget the military discount. $799 for the most expensive version drops to $719. I’ll keep my 5 as a backup. I’ll have to figure out something to do with the 4. Whole family already has iPads.

Are there ANY EFIS that are certified for primary airspeed indication?

Just had the same installed and assuming you install all the required sensors, they can replace the entire 6-pack. Got rid of the altimeter. The VSI isn’t required regardless, but it went away. Kept the turn coordinator as it goes with the autopilot. Kept the airspeed as it displays MPH and...

The turn back to the field... engine out

I’m not convinced that is true even though I have a dead friend who wasn’t successful. What I do know is you had better know you can pull it off if you turn back, or at the very least know you can at least try it without stalling the aircraft. At my home field they have nothing but houses...

LPV DA NA - Can I fly this approach and to what minimums?

LPV DA NA - Can I fly this approach and to what minimums?

You can fly LNAV/VNAV minimums with WAAS. Some where I have read the FAA's official statement on this, but I don't remember where. I think it's in the latest version of the AC that covers RNAV. It's probably on Bruce's website. Some 142 schools teach you to switch to baro, but the FAA...

    What’s your on course heading?

Because ATC may not recognize your destination's identifier and they would like to vector you in more or less the right direction. Also depending on what constraints they have with your next handoff ATC facility they may be able to clear you direct.

    Shopping for 2nd plane...(C182)

Turbos are good if you want to fly out west quite a bit, but otherwise not really worth it, at least for me. I get about 140 KTAS in mine and sometimes up to 144 in the neighborhood of 12.5 gph give or take a gallon or so. The newer ones might do another 5 knots due to the improved cowl...
