Planes in Film - What scenario is more plausible?

With oil pressure loss from a hose that's been severed, disconnected, whatever. While the engine will eventually cut out, is there still a chance because of rising engine heat, oil getting on to the engine that you might see at least smoke?

Planes in Film - What scenario is more plausible?

That's interesting. The video above showed a guy testing out losing oil pressure, there was no smoke the engine just died. But you got smoke becauses your oil was dumping on the hot exhaust and would have led to a fire and maybe had you stayed up longer you might have seen the oil pressure...

Planes in Film - What scenario is more plausible?

Yeah i took a look at this video which was really good. It took until around 17 mins before he said he would have probably shut it down and brought the plane down. The engine died at 17:12. So i guess it would all depend what you are flying over and whether or not you could get to somewhere...

Planes in Film - What scenario is more plausible?

Would that lead to overheating and then a fire?

I will look into that one

Planes in Film - What scenario is more plausible?

That is an interesting one. I was having a read of this: https://www.aopa.org/-/media/Files/AOPA/Home/Pilot-Resources/Safety-and-Proficiency/Accident-Analysis/Nall-Report/Nall_23_R4.pdf It looks as that is on the rise.

I was just getting to that question. Damn. ;)

Planes in Film - What scenario is more plausible?

Often we watch films or read books where we see an exciting, action-packed scenario and we say, that wouldn't happen. So, If you were watching a film or reading a novel where a bush plane runs into an issue and has to do an emergency landing because the engine craps out on them, which out of...

Do you mean SPOT tracker, InReach and PLB?

    ELT alarm - Clarification?

I came across this youtube video on 406 man was it an eye opener. He really talks about how so many bush pilots are still using 121.5 ELts, and that 406 works better but it also has its flaws. Ah I meant to say, check the antenna in preflight. No antenna or if it suffers from having being...

    ELT alarm - Clarification?

Ah, understood. So if the antenna was broken or not attached would I be correct in saying that when you flip that switch on the panel it might light up but no broadcast would be sent out because there is no antenna? ( hence the need to check before each flight) And interesting video i came...

    ELT alarm - Clarification?

Just to make sure I understand you. So 406 is GPS satellite that is monitored by military and SAR aircraft (Search-and-Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking System) And 121.5 is not GPS satellite and is radio-tower-based ( yes?) and that is still monitored by pilots ( airliners) and by pretty much...

    ELT alarm - Clarification?

Does the 406 broadcast on BOTH frequencies ( i.e it will try 121.5 then go to 406 or only on 406)? And if the antenna was not attached when you activated it would the LED light up but there would be no audible alert sent out?

    ELT alarm - Clarification?

I wonder how they will deal with pilots who still have 121.5 ELTs in their bush planes? And how does this effect PLBs which run on that frequency?

    ELT alarm - Clarification?

Okay, so that does confirm it. The audible alert is ONLY heard by those tuned into the frequency and not by the pilot or passengers in the crash, so there would be no real way for them to know if it worked or not unless help showed up. ( and as you said, 121.5 isn't monitored as much or not at...

    ELT alarm - Clarification?

I wondered if someone might clarify this. I was watching a video of a guy testing a 121.5 ELT device which is activated either by impact or by manually activating it remotely on a panel ( on the way down or upon landing ). In the video, it let off this audible alarm that could be heard coming...

How much do bush pilots know about First Aid?

I agree. It's important to do something than nothing. Applying a tourniquet above the wound would have at least slowed the flow of blood. Splinting isn't so much about walking out as it is preventing further injury, and reducing pain. In the best scenario help is close by, help arrives, but if...

How much do bush pilots know about First Aid?

Would you say that a large number of bush pilots are proficient in First aid or know just enough to handle minor issues? And if you were stuck in the wild with a friend who had a broken leg and you had zero help, would you know enough to splint that leg?

    Throttle stuck at full power?

My thoughts exactly. No need to land immediately.
