How to calculate a value for airstrip on my land?

My wife is a real estate appraiser and she has had occasion to appraise property with an airstrip and properties that are part of a home/airport community. I am not an appraiser but I can relate a few things I've learned from her through osmosis. An appraisal of a property takes into account...

VFR flight plans. Do you file them?

I know I am late to this thread. I have mostly not been filing VFR flight plans but have started filing recently on specific flights. I fly VFR from Culpeper VA CJR to Dexter MI 2E8 on a semi regular basis, a few times year. I maintain flight over land and avoid Lake Erie with a dogleg over...

Upcoming AD for many more PA-28 and PA-36 wing spars. 100 anomalies and 6 cracked wings found

I agree it is early days, and the number of problems found so far do not yet merit such a program. I also agree that Piper may be correct that the FAA is taking too hard of a position on this. It is a gray area as to what to do about it. Only time will tell if this is just a minor analomy or...

Upcoming AD for many more PA-28 and PA-36 wing spars. 100 anomalies and 6 cracked wings found

I now own a Mooney but I owned a PA28-140 for 14 years. These are a good family of airplanes, and a good platform for Piper. The Wing Spar AD is a big deal here and, even though it is early days still, this is a problem that is going to have to be addressed both for the owners and for Piper...

    Manifold pressure(aircraft) vs engine vacuum(automotive)

Another crazy setup was at an old landfill in about 1988 or so. The landfill had been capped off and our customer got a contract to harvest digester gas and he sold the gas to the buildings down the street for their boilers. He had a rig with a 3306 gas engine driving 2 roots blowers. One...

    Manifold pressure(aircraft) vs engine vacuum(automotive)

I got introduced to Manifold pressure as a diagnostic tool at Caterpillar Natural Gas Engine School in about 1980. On the 6-1/4 bore V engines. G379-V8 G398-V12 and G399-V16. These are heavy duty continuous engines rated at 1000 to 1200 RPM and 10,000 hours between overhauls. We were taught...

    Heavier actual airplane weight

I added the back shelf option and knots2U wheel pants to my 68 140 and it weighed in about the same as yours. So not out of the ordinary for older birds to gain weight. It still leaves you with 755 lbs useful load.

Is Broken at 1300 considered VFR?

Have you written up an ASRS report on this? It sounds like a safety related gray area between your interpretation and the tower ATC. Just a thought.

Engineer Ted's Hot Start Procedures for Injected Lycomings and Continentals

I quickly move the mixture full on and full off. Like a pump of the accelerator in a car.

Engineer Ted's Hot Start Procedures for Injected Lycomings and Continentals

I use nearly the same procedure but I crack open the throttle about double for hot start than for cold. It usually starts right up but if it doesn’t start after a few seconds I goose the mixture once to give it a quick shot of fuel. It fires up every time.

    911 TV 2024 premier

Our son suggest we watch this, and I nearly didn’t make it through the first of 3 episodes because the writing is sooooo bad! But after a while it is like watching a train wreck, or a really bad horror movie. You just can't look away. So the premise, also very bad, is tractor trailer load of...

    Manifold pressure(aircraft) vs engine vacuum(automotive)

There are two basic types of pressure readings: Gauge Pressure and Absolute Pressure. Gauge Pressure is balanced against the Atmosphere and the Atmospheric Pressure exerted by the air around us, whereas Absolute Pressure is balanced against a complete vacuum. At sea-level an Absolute Pressure...

    Scooters safe for GA?

Update on gravel. I am at the lake and have just finished 5 miles on gravel, grass and pavement. The 16" V8S does well on all these surfaces. It even went through some loose sand without trouble but I don't know how deep it was I am not saying it will do well on all sand. It did go through...

    Scooters safe for GA?

I have taken my 14D on a fair amount of gravel. It does well in packed gravel and grass that is not too bumpy, but not loose gravel or sand. The V8S with its larger 16" wheel is better but I haven't got a lot of time on that wheel yet. The scooters have very small wheels but I have no...

    Scooters safe for GA?

I got my new inmotion V8S this week. I already own a Kingsong 14D and have about 330 miles on it. I have only put less than a mile on the V8S and here is my initial comparison between the two. 1. The V8 rides a lot smoother and irregularities in the riding surface are not felt as keenly or...

Hot starts and engine shut downs

I have an IO-360 Lycoming and there is a really good hot start M20J Mooney video where the mechanic Don Maxwell does several hot starts. There is also a really good section about this in the book Aircraft Engine Ooerating Guide by Kas Thomas. That and what I have been told will add up to a lot...

    Dead technology

There is the answer to your question. Flying during wartime where the pilot and airplane life expectancy can be measured in minutes instead of years means doing anything and everything to get an edge over the enemy... at any cost. So what if they blow up an engine? They are probably going to...

In aircraft oxygen solutions for short flights and up to max. altitude of 10,000 feet?

I know that I have in the past. I can see my oxygen increase from a low of 88 to a high of 96 using this technique. It works, it is always with you, and it never runs out. I do keep a portable oxygen bottle in the plane with me, but I haven't needed it since using this technique. It is easy...

In aircraft oxygen solutions for short flights and up to max. altitude of 10,000 feet?

I know this is not the same thing, but I use a blood oxygen monitor on my finger and use "pursed lip breathing" techniques above 9000 feet. The idea is the oxygen content in the air is the same, but as air pressure drops your lungs cannot readily extract it. Pursed lip breathing builds air...
