The "Back in my day" Thread

Super elastic bubble plastic from Wham-o I can still remember that slight high you would get from breathing in from the straw.

    So I bought a C182 - what now?

I Have heard great things about the MT 2 blade with the PPONK! That’s probably the setup I would have chosen if I did that upgrade myself. I have the hartzell 3 blade scimitar prop. From what I understand you should see a few knots better cruse speed and I should have a little better climb...

    So I bought a C182 - what now?

Brad. If you have the sportsman cuff already, you really won’t see much if any difference in stall speeds. But, and it’s a big BUT! You will find an amazing difference in slow speed control authority. The VGs make a huge difference when it comes to slow speed authority in the effectiveness...

    So I bought a C182 - what now?

Mine came pretty well setup. It had the sportsman wing cuff, the PPONK O520, New panel with GTN750 , 2 G5s, JPI 900. I flew it for about 50 hours until I had a really good understanding of how it preformed. Then, spread out over the last 5 years I’ve replaced all the lights with LEDs. Replaces...

    So I bought a C182 - what now?

Congratulations! I fly my 182 quite a bit and absolutely love it! One thing I would suggest. Fly it for at least 50 hours before you do anything. I got this same advice and I’m glad I took it. By the time I had around 50 hours in the plane my priorities for upgrades had changed! Take some time...

What plane would you buy in my situation?

When I remove the wheel pants I loose around 5 knots. The other 5 to 10 knots comes with the 280 hp engine. I have a 3 blade propeller which I’m told costs me a few knots. If I switched it to a 2 blade I could probably get a little more speed but loses some of the climb rate. Still not as...

FFS. I need a new hobby.

At this point maybe you should just wait for the next hurricane and take the plane to visit a day or so before? lol. Just kidding…..

What plane would you buy in my situation?

I have a 1973 182 P. With a PPONK 280 horsepower O520. 3 blade prop. It has the sportsman wing cuff and micro VGs. It also has flap gap seals and exhaust faring. It’s a really good setup for both cruise speeds and very slow speeds.

FFS. I need a new hobby.

Really sorry to hear this! I’m hoping you can get it sorted and back up soon. Seems like a very simple system that “should have “ lasted for a long time if not forever.

What plane would you buy in my situation?

I love my 182. I’ve owned it for almost 5 years now and put just over 500 hours on it. I’ve flow it from Michigan to the Bahamas 3 times now. Back and forth to Florida several times. Back and forth to Nashville 3 times and just flew to New Orleans and back last month. It’s had a lot of...

Savannah GA - Cessna Skymaster crash 1 dead

Burn rate in the skymaster is normally in the low 20s. Usually around 22 -24. They fly pretty well on a single engine, either one. Sure looks like fuel exhaustion but that’s a guess based on what we know. Which isn’t much.

    Garmin GTN750 and GTN650xi with FS510

You don’t need another 510. Once you load the updates with Concierge it will send the update to the other one. It’s a great setup too. They will cross fill the flight plan also. This is nice because you can use the map page on the 750 and the route page on the 650. They work together quite well.

    Scooters safe for GA?

https://e-twowusa.com/products/copy-of-2022-etwow-gt-sport-with-bluetooth-and-rear-drum-brake This is a newer version of the one I have. Only weighs 27lbs! I've had it for about 4 years with no issues. Mine tops out about 25mph and I consistently go 25 -30 miles on a full charge. It folds up...

Talk Me Out of a Cirrus

I use a portable O2 system with cannulas all the time. I turn it on anytime I’m flying above 8k. It was a game changer for me and my wife! I can fly at 8-14k for 4+ hours and feel perfectly fine. Without oxygen, I always had a headache and felt fatigued after a few hours above ~ 8k. I’ve never...

Worrisome CHTs on an Overhauled Engine and New Engine Monitor

Honestly this sounds like an induction leak. Your fuel flow seems reasonable. I would check for an air leak causing you to run lean even with good fuel flow.

Instrument Approach Gear and Flap Sequence - A survey

However you do it, I think it's more important that you do it the same way every time. Then you are less likely to forget something, like the gear.

    Database Verification Failed GTN

Figured it out. Just had to push that button in the picture “show all DB’s”. Then it let me reinstall it. Feeling pretty stupid about it lol.

    Database Verification Failed GTN

I finally got around to updating the database for my GTN 750 and GNC 355. Something must have gotten corrupted in the 750 because I get this Database Verification Failed. I did the update using the Garmin Concierge in Pilot. It won’t let me reinstall the data, so I did it manually on the...
