    It's official... BasicMed expanded

I should have clarified...****if**** a Canadian customs agent appears for your arrival in Canada they will ask for your pilot cert and medical. Only a handful of times have I actually been met at the plane. When you return to the U.S., CBP will *always* appear (eventually, and yep, no pee break...

    It's official... BasicMed expanded

Yes, they do specifically ask for your medical.

    It's official... BasicMed expanded

You can now fly under BasicMed as PIC or as a required flightcrew member. This was fixed in the 11/22/2022 Balloon Medical rule.

    DOGE and the FAA

After COVID, many got hired on by the airlines making magnitudes more than they made at the FAA and left without even returning to the office to pack up their mug. It's also worth noting that many FSDOs cover a very large geographical area. Because of flexible work scheduling, ASIs can live...

    It's official... BasicMed expanded

I think the 7 seat thing was a fix to the PA-32 seat problem (many PA-32s are certified for 7 seats, even if only 6 are installed). The 12,500 was to fix the Cessna 400 series twin weight issue. (I suggested nixing the seat limit all together and just limit number of occupants regardless of...

    It's official... BasicMed expanded

In FAA's defense, much of this had been planned for some time. The congressional mandate bumped it up the rulemaking priority list. It's not by accident that this was the first rule making project resulting from the 2024 reauthorization.

    It's official... BasicMed expanded

The final rule implementing the reauthorization provisions for BasicMed has been published. You can now fly planes with 7 seats, and 12,500 pounds (sorry, no transport category helicopters!). Also, DPEs can now conduct exams using BasicMed.

    Zombie F-35 Mishap Report Out...

The report seems contradictory. The finding of pilot error in a case that was clearly on the margin sets a bad safety benchmark for other USMC pilots. When a completely fly by wire aircraft starts flickering and looses display three times at a low altitude you don’t have a lot of time to fix the...

    Lilium Runs Out of Money

I don’t disagree. There are cases like Brightline where $$$ is being invested in rail Problem is, in most cases, money is only part of the problem; acquiring land, passing the environmental assessment and dealing unhappy neighbors are unquantifiable problems. With eVTOl, if someone can make a...

Transition from Class III Special Issuance to Basic Med

They want him to send in data in March so they have time to reissue the medical before it expires.

    So I bought a C182 - what now?

Interesting! I replaced my 2 blade metal prop with a 2 blade MT composite so I'm actually looking weight on the nose with this upgrade. Looks like the Micro VGs are pretty straightforward to install.

    So I bought a C182 - what now?

Nice. PPonking (well XP-470ing) my 182 as we speak. I did the sportsman STOL cuff (mostly because I was buying new wingtip lights and didn't want to buy them twice). Do the micro VGs really do much beyond the cuff? Debating whether I want to bother with them down the road.

Transition from Class III Special Issuance to Basic Med

You don't need to send additional medical information if you do not intend to extend the medical. See Domingo Interp.

Transition from Class III Special Issuance to Basic Med

In February 2025, send a letter indicating that you are letting your medical certificate expire after April 30, 2025 and transitioning to BasicMed. Do not send any medical information. While your SI letter is good until 2030, your medical expires April 2025. After it expires, follow the process...

Special Issuance Requirements - Utterly Confused

Good question. When MOSAIC eventually comes along, we'll basically have three medial eligibility standards significantly overlapping the majority of light GA operations. What that will eventually morph into is anyone's guess.

Special Issuance Requirements - Utterly Confused

Designee management is outside of my wheelhouse, but I'm pretty familiar with the issues. The lack of DPEs is a downstream effect of lack of FAA inspectors, who are coming from the same cohort of pilots that the airlines had been, up until recently, throwing tons of money at. To make matters...

Special Issuance Requirements - Utterly Confused

There is no issue doing your initial training with BasicMed. It's less common since you need a one-time medical and most students still have a valid medical when it comes time to take the practical test. But the regs are clear and DPEs should be quite familiar with it. Heck, the DPE may be a...
