Fighter Pilot looking for advice on the GA world

I'M retired Air Force. Flew F111Ds and As mostly plus OV10s in SEA war. During my AF career owned Mooney by myself and later a Cherokee 235 with 2 partners. Since retiring I have owned a quarter share in PA31-310 Navajo (3 kids an 8 grandkids). For your mission I would strongly recommend a...

Aspen PRO PFD no minimums triangles

We have a newly installed Aspen Evolution1000 Pro PFD installed . When we set in approach minimums they show up in Mins window , but as we descend to mins we do net get the green 500', yellow 200", or stripped Mins triangles on the altitude tape. Installer and tech support can't help. Does...

JPI 790 paired with Avidyne IFD 440

We upgraded our JPI EDM 760 to a 790 and no longer have fuel data on the IFD440. For anyone with this combination what are the RS232 settings that you use to get the fuel data to the IFD?

Is it possible to catch preignition or detonation prior to cylinder damage?

Mike Bush had a discussion of this a few years back. He mentioned a case Where a Cirrus pilot that had this exact situation but no engine monitor wound up with an engine failure and overhaul. Another Cirrus but with an engine monitor reacted just like you and had no damage and a normal landing...

Best Insurance Carrier (Underwriter) for Senior Pilots?

I am 76 and to fly my Navajo solo the insurer requires an annual IPC. The insurer is ANPAC and the premium is high, but reasonable. Also any pilot must have at least 2000 hours total, 1000 hours multi, and minimum of a commercial or higher certificate.

Damage History - What would you do?

My 1968 Navajo had something (probably a hangar) hit the tail section over 42 years ago. Everything back of the cabin door was replaced using factory jigs by a reputable shop and well documented. The way I see it, the rear quarter of the plane is a 1979 model. The sucker flies straight as an...

    FlyQ EFB and NEXRAD

Thanks for your reply. I too have version 6.02, but don't get the Nexrad radar depiction. My ADSB source is a Stratux receiver. What is your ADSB source? When my weather source is the internet, I do get the precipitation returns.

    FlyQ EFB and NEXRAD

About 1 1/2 yrs ago I received an email from Seattle Avionics that due to a software change FlyQ could no longer depict Nexrad, but that they were working on a fix. I still do not show the ADSB Nexrad depiction though I can get all of the other WX products. Am I doing something wrong, or is...

    JPI EDM790

Just replaced EDM 760 with 790. Combined EDM 760/790 manual implies inputing starting fuel is the same, but it isn't. Spoke with JPI tech support, but they were no help. On 790 when after start option of adding fuel comes up I push the right (LF) button and display shows 108 gal (my usable...

    Popup or Call FSS?

Since most of my flights go through NY Approach airspace I know that odds are better than 50/50 that they will tell me to go to FSS if I try to get a pop up that where the destination is in somebody else's airspace. When there is any doubt about wx at destination I use the fltplan.com option of...

How can a pilot "forget" to put down gear in C510?

In 18000+ hours I've never even come close to forgetting to put it down, but I'll never say that it can't happen to me. Based on many accident reports that I've read over the past 50 years, I've seen that highly experienced military, airline, and corporate pilots have failed to do so. Given...

No one should G lock on a break from initial. You should only be pulling 2 gs with the 60 deg bank.

    Navajo Cost of Ownership?

I did consider the fact that the tail wheel were more dangerous on takeoff and landing which was partly offset by the lower reliability of the turbcharged Allison engines in comparison with P51 Rolls Royce engines, but the huge difference in losses is much more than could be explained by the...

    Navajo Cost of Ownership?

I did mean the SE fighters did have a significantly higher loss rate in training than the P38s. In combat the P38s had a .2% higher loss rate.

    Navajo Cost of Ownership?

Apache Wind, I did forget one thing. The only credible statistics I've ever fond for the SE vs ME accident argument comes from. WW II records of training losses. Pilots and their training were basically equivalent and losses were significantly higher for both the P47 and P51 compared to the P38.

    Navajo Cost of Ownership?

I share a PA31-310 with 2 partners. Our all in cost is about $500 or a little less per hour. We operate it LOP at cruise and burn 26 gph while cruising at 165 to 175 KTAS depending on load and altitude. With all 4 tanks we can go 900 NM with IFR reserves and 925 lbs of people and luggage. With...
