1969 Cherokee 140B: Slow to climb

Thanks to those that had great answers. There was little to no wind. Everything felt normal on the controls and even roll out and rotation. Unless the tach was lying RPM was where it should be and engine running smooth. The ADS-B data was quite telling. Initial climb out was around 150fpm but...

1969 Cherokee 140B: Slow to climb

Clear up a few things. My passenger is a pilot with lots of hours and in type. It was a mutual decision to continue, burn some fuel and go to where an A&P familiar with my airplane is. There was no engine problem, correct RPM for the climb and smooth running. The ADS-B data holds the biggest...

1969 Cherokee 140B: Slow to climb

Carb heat was not on and mags were both. The tach read 2,400 and airspeed was 85mph (Vy), pretty normal for takeoff. I have a climb prop, don’t know the specifications until I look into the log. That I know for sure. Whether the instruments were lying I have no way to tell. Roll out and rotation...

1969 Cherokee 140B: Slow to climb

I always take off at WOT at full rich mixture. As to the decision to fly an hour away was the cruise climb was where it should be and the cruise RPM and airspeed was where it should be. My home airport has jumpers and I left the area as I was getting in the way circling the airport. I...

1969 Cherokee 140B: Slow to climb

The POH performance chart only shows density altitude and weight to determine climb performance. I got the density altitude from the AWOS. The temperature is what I read on my car and does not factor into the performance charts which was just my observation. The Cherokee may be slow to climb but...

1969 Cherokee 140B: Slow to climb

The flaps were up so that was not with it. The primer was in a locked but even if it wasn’t RPM was where it should have been on climb out. I would suspect if the primer wasn’t in or leaking I would have had an RPM drop. Have had the airplane for 6 years and never had this happen before.

1969 Cherokee 140B: Slow to climb

Had an interesting problem I can’t figure out. Barely any wind if any at all, 83 degrees F out and calculated take off weight of 2,000 pounds with a passenger. I have flown with this same person and weather before and could easily achieve a climb rate of 700fpm. With the density altitude...

    Cherokee floor vents

Why did Piper change from the overhead and door vents to the later floor vents? Having learned in Cessna 172s the wing vents were nice. However in my 1969 Cherokee 140 the floor vents don’t seem to cool you as good has the Cessna 172 vents. I have never flown an older Cherokee with the overhead...

Do you call when you're the unknown traffic

Sometimes busy airports are too busy to pay attention to FF. During flight training my instructor and I flew from South Jersey to North Jersey (Greenwood Lake). We got flight following and handed off to New York. When we had Greenwood lake in sight we called to cancel flight following with no...

    Concorde RG-35AXC Battery Terminals

My 1969 Cherokee 140B currently has a Gil battery that is about 9 years old and really slow to crank. I want to replace it with a a Concorde RG-35AXC. The Gil has wing nut connections to the battery. From pictures of the RG-35AXC it looks like round terminals. Do the battery wires have to be...

    Cessna 150G Banner Plane

Just read at a local airport a 150G crashed while attempting to pick up a banner. From the article the airplane was unable to climb after picking up the banner. No word on engine malfunction and the pilot survived the crash into the woods. My question is seems a 150 whether it be any model is...

    Basic Med and stints

Yea, I mean stents. No heart or brain but each leg and stomach major arteries.

    Basic Med and stints

My cousin has been flying for over 20 years VFR SEL. When Basic Med became available he switched to it. He is currently in the hospital with 3 aneurysms; both legs and stomach. He is a good candidate to have stints put in as out patient surgery and avoiding slice and dice surgery. Since he is...

Big Rant. 100 Hours in and no solo. Need any advice.

I was in a similar situation. I got my PPL at 57 and 62 hours flying twice a week. However I was struggling with landing. It just seemed to never click with me. My cousin who flies a Pitts and has a Cherokee 140 would call me after every lesson and he was getting frustrated it was taking me too...

    Charles Godefroy

I was a little slow on the uptake there and had to look up what happened to Charles after the war. Then I got the reference to Martha.

    Charles Godefroy

Never heard of this guy before. Who is he you ask? In 1919 flew through the Arch de Triomph in Paris. He only got a warning.

    Plane rental time

Just FYI. Some rental places charge wet and dry time. Dry time is if you take the airplane somewhere and don’t fly it for a few days. For example you have a 3 day weekend and rent the airplane. You fly 2 hours to the destination which is Hobbes time. The plane sits for 2 days before flying back...

    Raffling a flight for charity

Thanks for the link, it was extremely helpful! Lots of paperwork but within the realm of doable. Will consider it for next year.
