First plane? Archer, Arrow, etc. any recommendations

If I'm the OP, and going to fly anywhere beyond about 150nm trips, I'd seriously consider the Arrow. Fixed gear Cherokees are often more expensive because they are wanted as trainers, and Arrows can get you places noticeably faster and for cheaper per trip. That pays for the little bit extra...

Best overall month to do a long trip by 140 knot piston single?

She and the dog enjoy it. I usually fly longer flights at 10-11k instead of 5000-8000, so turbulence is usually a little less. The only issue with that is we have a yearly trip that ends in early September, then another that starts in late October.

How much have Trent Palmer's legal costs been?

    1) If he is a PPS member, they are obligated to give him legal assistance. 2) You realize this is about more than Trent Palmer, right?

Okay, so what would a low-cost airplane look like?

Piper is building VFR 3 seat Cherokees for mid 200s. IFR for just under 300, and that gets you a GFC500, GTN 650 and G3x. And those are certified airplanes with Lycoming engines that can go places. Not 100K, but Piper will give you better financing than an experimental

Best overall month to do a long trip by 140 knot piston single?

IFR is not an issue for me - airplane has dual WAAS GPS, dual ILS, I'm current and proficient in the airplane, and have a good autopilot so I don't get tired. My concerns are primarily convection and icing, though the discomfort of heat would also be something to avoid.

Best overall month to do a long trip by 140 knot piston single?

I was thinking if taking my GF and our dog on a XC trip in the airplane - maybe for 2 weeks or so. I'm assuming it will be the Tiger. Go somewhere like Maine, while crossing the middle of the country probably across the South/middle first and back via the Northern Tier (maybe even Canada) Would...

Looking for cheap hangar LA area

The biggest issue with Compton is no instrument approaches and no tower at a rather busy airport in extremely busy airspace. Otherwise, it's a decent option. HHR is probably expensive for a hangar now. A lot of folks tie down there though and get good treatment from the FBOs - airline pilots...

How much have Trent Palmer's legal costs been?

This was MUCH different from the Trevor Jacob debacle. Palmer was doing a low pass over a dirt strip to determine whether it was a safe landing site - a technique that is considered good airmanship. Some neighbor complained and the FAA decided to make an example of him, despite him probably...

Leasing time in aircraft to a non-pilot

This is one of the reasons that flight schools will have their airplanes owned by a different entity than their flight school. That way, CFIs can do some for hire to renters. At least they have previously thought that way.

LPV as alternate. 600 or 800 feet?

I guess it is more precise to say that there are certain ILS installations that are protected by MON, while others could be subject to being shut down.

IFR Clearance - Non towered airport

It is one CD number initially, but it is not one person working that number. After you call the number, you have to press 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 (5 is San Diego, I don't have the rest memorized) to get routed to the right area's flight data person (or, if it's like 5 am, you might get the controller...

Approach trivia: KPHH NDB IAP is gone

Hey, there are plenty of NDBs out there. They are just known by their regular name - AM radio stations! Lol

IFR Clearance - Non towered airport

Each area (San Diego, Coast, Inland, Burbank, L.A.) has their own separate extension and is handled by different people.

Operations Threshold to Establish a Tower

I don't think a TRSA is gonna show up anywhere anymore. I can think of one of those towers that really needs to get recommissioned - KMCC How does that work at an airport with 6 charted instrument approaches? Out of 28 non military airports with towers in Southern California (didn't count...

LPV as alternate. 600 or 800 feet?

So long as no one position and holds on your lawn! Lol. LUAW is actually better phraseology for clarity and also various accents. That actually is true - there are ILS installations that will go away with MON.. I don't really see a difference between LNAV and LOC anyway.

IFR Clearance - Non towered airport

At SCT, the person on the phone is usually deducted flight data, so it shouldn't be too hard.

IFR Clearance - Non towered airport

Personally, like you, I always file. I think the main use of "local IFR" these days is to pick up an IFR-VFR on top or to pick up very local approaches in actual.

Flight following - not sure why I didn't use it before

Honestly, I can't tell you the last time I flew a completely direct route on FF. Between airspace rules and terrain in the places I fly VFR, direct isn't happening. As far as I know, the handoffs work similarly to an IFR handoff and there's not really an issue.

IFR Clearance - Non towered airport

If it is busy, they may tell you they can't do it, but I've never seen that. Usually, ground or clearance will just input it for you and read off the clearance.
