iOS 18 Text Messages via Satellite

That's weird. Shorelines should present no limitation to satellite comms. Ah, I just read that they're currently limiting it to US/Canada, so they have beyond 30-90 miles offshore geofenced off. I'd expect that geofence to be removed as they expand service beyond US/Canada.

iOS 18 Text Messages via Satellite

It was, before iOS 18. With iOS 18 you can use satellite for regular messages.

iOS 18 Text Messages via Satellite

It's free for now. From what I've read, should be free for at least 2 years. And yes, you CAN use it text to non-apple devices, such as Android.

iOS 18 Text Messages via Satellite

With iOS 18, you can send text messages via satellite when there’s no WiFi or cell signal. I know a few who say it works in their GA planes. How many of you have tried it? How reliable / consistent is the sat signal? https://support.apple.com/en-us/120930

Best aurora - Sat May 11 or Sun May 12?

Thinking about taking the family up to see it from the airplane, trying to figure out which night would be best. One app seems to indicate tonight (Saturday) has the higher KP index, but the NOAA site seems to indicate Sunday might be stronger. Do we have any aurora experts/enthusiasts here who...

Opinions on the JMB VL-3 915

Good call of trying to see for yourself, because those numbers you've "been told" are not realistic. I have hundreds of hours behind Rotax 915-powered engines. A good friend has a 916. He says the Max ECO fuel burn is identical. This idea that the 916 will save 1gph over the 915 in cruise is...

Opinions on the JMB VL-3 915

Are you still talking about the VL3? It does not have a 1,000nm range at 200KTAS. The 200KTAS figure is top speed at FL180 at Max Continuous Power. Fuel burn at MCP is 11gph. It only holds 37 gallons of fuel. Normally, you'd cruise at Max ECO power, where you'd burn 8gph and cruise more like...

Which airplanes are you most excited about potentially being available in US under MOSAIC / mLSA rules?

All of these currently can only be purchased as experimental in the US. But under the proposed MOSAIC / mLSA rule change, they would all be able to be purchased as factory-built, ready-to-fly airplanes.

Which airplanes are you most excited about potentially being available in US under MOSAIC / mLSA rules?

Doh! Typo in the poll. Correct in the title and post content, but I can't edit the poll itself. Oh well. Most people can figure it out from context.

Which airplanes are you most excited about potentially being available in US under MOSAIC / mLSA rules?

People seem to be stuck on the word "excited." Fine, scratch it and replace with "looking forward to." One can still look forward to things that may be years down the road. Don't get hung up on a word, just answer which plane you find most interesting.

Which airplanes are you most excited about potentially being available in US under MOSAIC / mLSA rules?

We shall see. Even GAMA says their members can't reach consensus on what to do on the subject. I'm thinking this horse has left the barn, regardless of what GAMA wants.

    That's not what they're saying. https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/gama-says-it-supports-four-place-aircraft-in-mosaic/

Which airplanes are you most excited about potentially being available in US under MOSAIC / mLSA rules?

Yeah, I wanted to include the Jabiru J430, but ran out of poll choices.

Which airplanes are you most excited about potentially being available in US under MOSAIC / mLSA rules?

Which multiengine airplanes would fall under the proposed MOSAIC mLSA rules? Maybe Tecnam P2006T? I'm thinking more about planes that one can't currently buy in the US (in other than Experimental category). Are there other multiengine options that would fit into that niche?

Which airplanes are you most excited about potentially being available in US under MOSAIC / mLSA rules?

Hence the word "potentially." It's a hypothetical question. Answer based on most recent information, which of course is subject to change. Use your imagination. ;)

Which airplanes are you most excited about potentially being available in US under MOSAIC / mLSA rules?

Which airplanes are you most excited about potentially being available in US under MOSAIC / mLSA rules? Are you more interested in the new, fast 2-seaters or modern, efficient 4-seaters? The first five poll choices are 2-seaters, last five are 4-seaters. (I know there are more options out...

Success rate of off-airport deadstick landings

Thanks. I am an EAA member, and I downloaded the PDF you linked. Nice work. The way you broke out the engine failure fatality rate, between those who stalled and those who didn't, reminds me of another EAA webinar I saw regarding "the impossible turn." Of the engine failure after takeoff...

Success rate of off-airport deadstick landings

Hi Ron. I really appreciate your data-driven analysis and articles. I keep your article, "Homebuilt Accidents: Passing the Engine Baton" handy when Lycoming & Continental owners start bad-mouthing my Rotax! :D In your graphic above, do you have the data on the overall survival rate without...

Success rate of off-airport deadstick landings

Yeah, that's always the trouble. The only thing I could find was this article: https://www.aopa.org/training-and-safety/students/flighttestprep/skills/emergency-landings First the author delineated the difference between precautionary landing, forced landing and ditching. Then he compared the...

Success rate of off-airport deadstick landings

I’m trying to find data on the success rate of off-airport deadstick landings. I’m having trouble finding the data I need. I’ve checked the NTSB’s General Aviation Accident Dashboard and CAROL, as well as AOPA’s Richard G. McSpadden (formerly Nall) Report, but neither allow me to filter the way...
