    I Hate my Cellphone!

I once saw a man riding a bicycle and smoking a cigarette. The interesting thing was when he tapped the ash from his cigarette into the ash tray mounted on the handle bars. He was about the coolest guy I have ever seen!

    Pakistan International Airlines crash

Most people in the West just don’t understand how things work in 3rd world countries. They assume the level of safety, integrity and competency is the same everywhere. It’s not.

    prop ground clearance on twins?

Take a corner too fast in a 285 hp Baron with 2 bladed props and a strut just a little low and you may find the very tips of your props have a flat end. Seen plenty of them in my “night freight days”.

Cost of Overhaul P&W Citation Excel

Might be cheaper to replace the engines with used mid time spares. If you get serious with this issue send me a PM, I know a very good engine consultant that knows P&W engines. I have worked with him in the past and he saved us a lot of money. He will what to do and where the spare engines are.

    Do you hangar when traveling?

I always hangar, unless it is for just one night, we are departing early, and weather is not an issue. If I can’t afford to hangar then I can’t afford to own the plane.

    ADS-B

I've travelled to both coasts and to the far Northern reaches of Michigan from East Texas, and somehow managed to avoid ALL Class B and C airspace in the process! It was not as difficult as some seem to think, and I really didn't feel like I was flying much out of my way to do so. Lots of...

    ADS-B

Or are willing to land outside of ADS-B airspace, pay much less for avgas and the rental car, and drive in to where you need to be. One can still get plenty of utility without ADS-B, especially if you live in the vast areas of the country where it isn’t required and can avoid the airspace on...

    Accelerated IFR Course

Years ago I worked as an instructor for the company that is today American Flyers. Most students usually arrived with no prior IFR experience, the instrument written completed, and at least the minimum flight experience required. 10 to 14 days later they left with an instrument rating...

    Piper Arrow purchase advice

Grumman Tiger? As fast as the Arrow, solid airframe, cheaper to insure, cheaper to maintain, great leg room in the back, open the canopy for hot weather ops. Seemed like a better choice to me.

Buying an airplane; how much “Total Time” is too much?

Alex: An Arrow is a fine aircraft, however a Grumman tiger may be even better. Just as fast as the Arrow without the maintenance of a constant speed prop and retractable gear. Cheaper to insure too! The visibility from the Tiger cockpit is incredible, plenty of leg room in the back seat, and...

Buying an airplane; how much “Total Time” is too much?

Depends on the airplane. You need to read the FAA Type Certificate Data Sheet for the aircraft models you are considering. The Data Sheet will list any life limited components like wing spars. In the case of the Grumman Tiger, the spars are life limited to 12,500 hours, so a 10,000 hr Grumman...

    Switchable EGT/CHT Gauge?

I have the Electronics International (EI) equivalent, I believe it’s an EAC1 which came with the plane. It is a single cylinder CHT/EGT digital gauge with OAT. I installed the EI 4 position switch and associated probes last year. Now I can view each cylinder CHT or EHT as desired. Great for...

    GDL-82 vs SkyBeacon

I have NOT made a decision on WHAT to install or even to comply or not. However, whenever I make an important decision I always spend a lot of time reseraching until I thoroughly understand the issue to include all problems I can reasonably expect to encounter. I have been researching ADS-B...

    GDL-82 vs SkyBeacon

John: Thank you for that post. Makes things a bit more clear but the issue is still overly complex. I go well out of my way to avoid anything that would precipitate a letter from the FSDO. Strangely, compliance with ADS-B increases the odds of unwelcome FAA attention. Not sure it’s worth it.

    GDL-82 vs SkyBeacon

GDL82 problem with military radar: https://tinyurl.com/y5doqfn7 Concerning inoperative components; Once installed, the ADS-B system is required to be on and operating at ALL times. If the GDL82 fails you are grounded because ADS-B is inop. If the transponder fails, the GDL82 won’t be able...

    GDL-82 vs SkyBeacon

My research indicates that the GDL82 may have a few issues that prevent me from “pulling the trigger” on it. 1. It is integrated with your transponder. If the GDL82 fails you are grounded. If the transponder fails, the GDL82 fails and you are grounded. However, if the Skybeacon fails for...

Hypothetical question on transatlantic aircraft selection

Last time I looked, for a flight to Europe, Net Jets charged the entire round trip from the USA to Europe, they would drop you and return back to the USA empty. Then they charged you another round trip to bring you home. So 2 round trips charged for a single trip to Europe would probably eat...
