    Mountain flying

Are you certain you have to have the turbo? It would be nice, especially in the hot summer months, but possible is not a "necessity," especially if you are looking for lower maintenance costs. We've flown our Mooney with an O-360 in it all over the place in the southwest (CA/AZ/UT/ID) and...

Duke down and on fire, Fullerton CA

There are noise abatement procedures, Runway 06 is preferred and when departing 06 to follow the railroad and no turns until 1000' AGL. Taking off on Runway 24, no turns before 700' AGL. I do not think that played any role here.

Duke down and on fire, Fullerton CA

It was not a go around. I was there and watched him take off. I started to drive away after he lifted off and then saw the fireball.

Duke down and on fire, Fullerton CA

I couldn't say, just relaying my experience there at the airport last night and that of a mechanic that was there. I was in my hangar when he was doing his run-up so couldn't say how long he was there. I did hear different planes going through run-ups but have no idea how long that particular...

Duke down and on fire, Fullerton CA

His previous flight from UT to CA on the 15th was supposed to leave at 10:00pm UTC and didn't depart until 10:43pm UTC, perhaps not "unlikely".

Duke down and on fire, Fullerton CA

The pilot should have been familiar with the runway, I am told he had a hangar there. I was there last night and saw him start to depart, I had just finished flying. I was leaving and stopped about where the red dot is on the picture because I heard a plane getting ready to depart and like most...

Cessna 414 down in Yorba Linda

Update provided by NTSB ,five people passed away, the pilot, plus four people in the house, two males and two females. A very sad day. https://ktla.com/2019/02/03/crews-responding-to-fire-in-yorba-linda-following-report-of-small-plane-crash/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

Cessna 414 down in Yorba Linda

One of the engines is up against the front of a house with the prop in the driveway quite a bit from the crash site. This is all just up the hill from my house. We saw the smoke on the way home from church and thought it was just a house fire. When we got home the neighbors were all outside...

It can be seen in some of the pictures of the fuselage.

Cessna 414 down in Yorba Linda

Debris scattered over quite a large area, accounts saying the plane came down in pieces.

    NA - Anaheim event

Which hours would that be? I've been there at 5am, during the middle of the day, at 11pm, it's always a disaster... I try to avoid LAX whenever possible, even if it's more expensive. As others have said, SNA and LGB are both fantastic airports to fly in and out of.

    First Solo Night Cross Country

Mine was just past there to Thermal, I thought it would be cool to land below sea level. The altimeter stopped at zero... I love flying at night, but I try to make sure I am somewhere that I can see some kind of lights below, the LA Basin is perfect for it. I am not to where I will fly across...

    GoPro Mounting in the Cockpit

I used a suction mount inside as well and it did a good job. This is the one I bought, $13.00 was right in my price range. You can position it however you want. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PQ4ACQ2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This was some pattern work when I was...

    ADS-B hidden gems?

Not in those specific words but the implication was there. Yes it is "resource dependent" however I have never been denied flight following in the past 250 hours of flight (and yes, that is in busy areas, not the middle of nowhere). I have had once where I was unable to get the controller to...

    ADS-B hidden gems?

Just because someone doesn't have ADS-B out does not mean they are flying blind through the sky putting themselves and others at risk... I have had traffic and weather on my tablet for a couple years courtesy of a Stratux that I built, it works very well. When I am flying cross country I am...

    ADS-B hidden gems?

The Skybeacon is certified now. I think it is probably the most inexpensive and easiest to install. They are still working on certification for their tail beacon. https://uavionix.com/products/skybeacon/

    LoLPilot's Private Checkride

Congratulations! I enjoyed reading your write up. I'm not sure I would call it a colossal freebie or that you made a massive blunder in your choice of the airport for a diversion. You knew where you were, you were never in any danger, and you knew where to go to land safely. If anything it...
