VFR flight plans. Do you file them?

I guess the title says it all. I had a Private Pilot applicant of mine get berated by an examiner because he'd never filed a flight plan. I teach flight following and explain how to file, open, & close a flight plan. There is a place for them but personally I never file them.

    Any Career CFI's?

I've been a full time CFI for the last three years. I've had many different careers in my life but always stayed active in aviation. I've spent approximately 13 years of my life full time in aviation. I was a CFI when I was 18 in 1975. I've flown charter, corporate, forest service, owned two...

Turbo Arrow lands on golf course in Sacramento

He is fortunate to survive to ol' "impossible turn". To be fair I'm unfamiliar with that airport to know what his options were.

How many here have read these books. See attached poll?

Full time CFI here. Of course I reference these publications all the time but can't say I've read any of them cover to cover. I think I have rudimentary understanding of them though.

Who or what flights qualify for FF?

The other day I test flew a Bonanza for our shop. It had sat for 18 years. When the shop completed a very through annual I did a very through preflight & then took it up. I flew for 2.5 hours. The first 45 minutes were in gliding distance of our uncontrolled airport. I wanted to see if the...

Oil - who is using what

I use peanut oil when frying turkeys but in my Husky I use W100. That's what it ran the first 520 hours of it's life so I've stuck with it. That said, Ive only flew it 10 hours in the first month of ownership. Funny thing is I used it in the 182 that I just sold so I still had some in the...

    Dan Gryder Lockheed Electra Crash

Speaking of checking the brakes on landing. I had an incident in a Bonanza early this spring. I was getting a Bonanza owner ready for his commercial check ride & we decided to go to a local grass strip & do some real soft field takeoffs & landings. Little did we know that in the process we...

I joined the ranks of the financially irresponsible last week

Great choice. It's hard to beat the versatility of a Skylane. Even though I've owned two of them & fly them quite regularly as an instructor I never tire of them. Just remember to use that nose up trim on landing & pull hard that heavy elevator when you're touching down. But you probably...

    My tailwheel training impressions..

I've had my new Husky for about 5 weeks. I haven't flown a tailwheel much in the last 20 years or so. Prior to that I did a lot of glider towing with Super Cubs & Champions. I also did train numerous pilots to fly tailwheel & signed off a bunch of tailwheel endorsements. But again over 20...

Pireps on the new Lightspeed Delta?

In January I had one of my fine flight" learners" step on the controller on my Lightspeed Zulu's. I sent them in to LS but they were unrepairable mostly due to age so they offered me a few hundred dollars trade in credit so I bought the DZ's. I haven't been as pleased with them as I'd hoped I...

    Glider add on

I owned a soaring operation for three years. I'm a CFIG. I did a lot of add-ons & every pilot without exception were thrilled to experience soaring. It was a lot of fun. When COVID came along we sold our Blanik and moved on. I too would recommend going for the commercial.

Is it me or Cessna 182s just went up by $30-50K in the last 1-2 months?

I recently sold my 57 182A for $120,000. Initially was hoping to get 130K but I felt fairly good with the selling price especially considering what I paid for it in 2016. It paid for a big hunk of my Husky.

    Complex/High Performance aircraft questions

Great question. When I am asked to do a Flight Review in a high-performance airplane I always ask the pilot before they start their engine if everything works in the airplane. After they respond yes then I ask them why their MP qauge is showing 30 (for example) most say they've never seen it...

    Lightspeed headset brain holder

I recently bought a pair of Lightspeed Zulu Deltas. I need a way to secure the controller so it doesn't just dangle by the cords. Most online options are upwards of $35.00. This seems ridiculously high for a piece of plastic. I need multiples for my own airplane plus the company airplanes I...

Can you jump a 12V plane battery with a car?

Of course you can. I've done it many times. Just be mindful of the prop if the airplane's battery is in the engine compartment.

    Buying a new airplane

After owning my 182A for over 8 years it's time to pass her over to a new owner. The 182 is under contract & should close within 10 days or so. I'm a little sad to see it go. It's been a good reliable airplane. With the STOL kit it made a great towplane for the glider operation I used to...

    Cub Crafter prices

I don't intend to bash Cub Crafter airplanes. I've instructed in them & admit they are a hoot to fly with spectacular climb performance & docile slow speed handling. I'm in the process of selling my straight tail 182 & buying a tailwheel airplane built by another manufacture. Just for grins...

Any regrets moving up to better plane

I guess I'm kind of moving sideways? I put my 182 up for sale & am buying a Husky. I'll miss the 182 but will have more fun in the Husky.

1983 Learjet 55 Out to Pasture in Montana

I learned to fly in Livingston. It's always windy there. I'm grateful to have learned there & not dear the wind.

Sell my airplane now or wait

I'm curious why you said that? It appears you're a tailwheel guy. One of the reasons I would trade to feel more tailwheel proficient. I do some tailwheel instruction including in a Cessna 180 but would like to feel more competent.
