68 yr old gentleman killed at KLAL today

Local FL news reports he was on his student solo flight when he slammed into the ground short of the runway. Plane burst into flames immediately with no chance to rescue him. Knowing what the media does to facts I hope at least he wasn't a student. Realizing what was probably a dream he had...

    Drones shut down airport

The good news is they arrested a man and a woman today for flying those drones. The bad news is they only face up to 5 yrs!

    Plane Down-Western Iowa

Gotta add my two cents worth since I suffered 2 heart attacks within days in January. First one absolutely no pain, numbness, tingling the usual signs. All I had was the driest, not sore, throat I've ever had. In local hospital for 4 days. Two days after being released, had great difficulty...

Pilots and Paws Peeps, Get Ready to Fly Some Greyhounds

It's alot easier to adopt a greyhound than a racehorse. Most yards won't accommodate them. Finally the Thoroughbred Assoc started funding retirement places for these horses years ago. Unfortunately their numbers are large and they eat more than dogs so all do not find that green pasture...

    Thrust reverser on a PA32

During my primary training back in the '80's my instructor and I were flying a 152 doing maneuvers over our usual practice area. Winds at our altitude of 3K were forecasted to be 30 knots but we soon found out that was slightly incorrect. Instructor had me turn into the wind for some slow...

Pilots and Paws Peeps, Get Ready to Fly Some Greyhounds

No different than horse racing. Fatal injuries in both. Horses and dogs both penned up except for "work." Guess more dog sympathizers than horse folks. And don't even get me started on the dog show circuit!

    N/A — Count your stars

Thanks, Jim. I totally understand. Death is a subject most people don't want to ever discuss but unfortunately it is the only thing we all are guaranteed sometime in our life. I've lost family the hard way, brother committed suicide, and others the "normal" way. Never easy. Up until 6 yrs...

    N/A — Count your stars

Amen! Wish I had followed that advice 30 yrs ago. Now in my 7th decade with cancer getting the upper hand, I wish I had found a way to get that DC3 type rating I always dreamed about. It always was #1 on my bucket list and #2 was driving the Budweiser Clydesdale hitch. Too late for either...

An examiner's suggestion for instrument currency

"Currency goes in your logbook. Proficiency keeps you alive!" I've posted my little saying before. No set number of instrument maneuvers makes you proficient. You work on it until you feel good about HAND FLYING on the gauges.

Missing in Action: Lightning Strike, all is chaos

And that's the very reason why I UNPLUG all electrical with the first sign of storms. Here in Missouri that doesn't happen all that much but while I lived in Florida, sometimes it was a daily occurrence. It gives me time to catch up on my reading!o_O

Getting Back to IFR After 13 Years...

Got most of these guys beat -- quite flying in '91 and didn't return to last year. With over 6,000 hrs and ATP CFI, CFII, MEI still spent many hours refreshing the mind with books, plates and enroute charts. Obviously anything with GPS involved was a whole new learning curve. Did a lot of...

Best Accelerated Multi-Add on for buck?

Try Deland Aviation, Deland, FL. Ask for Dave (chief flight instructor). Tell him your're Air Force and go from there (he flew U2). He only instructs during the week, no weekends. I know they use a Jet Blue captain for DPE and he does do the multi. Recommend Dave very highly.

When was the last time you went around?

How many CFI's teach go arounds? When I came to FL to fly with my son (new PPL) it amazed me at how much he had not been taught. As you can imagine our "pleasure flights" have turned into a furthering of his education! I was down here and in the plane when his instructor decided to solo him...

Landing without aileron or elevator (no yoke)

Guess times just changed over the years. When I instructed back in the 80's I had my students do this until proficient. Also made my instrument students fly with throttle, rudder and trim down the ILS. My primary instructor had me do it and he made a real good argument for why it should be...

    Midair over Everglades

I always had students run the landing light in the practice area AND whenever in the airport traffic area. Don't see that much anymore. Wonder why? Have bulbs become that expensive!!o_O

    Midair over Everglades

I heard from early reports that this was a head-on collision. Nothing confirmed so far but if it was, at least two pilots failed in see-and-avoid. I did all my training and instructing in central Florida back in the 80's. Wasn't as much traffic back then but since I've been flying with my son...

    Midair over Everglades

Ralph Knight who was killed in this crash was a DPE. Wonder if the FAA will do anything now with Dean! Two DPE's in recent months. Terrible.

    Phone Scammers Getting Smarter...

Land line with answer machine. If I don't recognize the number the machine gets it. When the kids were little and I got a sales call or like, I'd hand the phone to one of them (3-5 yr olds). Kept them busy until the dumb one on the other line realized who, or what, they were talking to...

Bad press for ATP Flight School

Yesterday an instructor and student flying a Seminole damaged two homes in Daytona Beach while ending up in a retention pond behind the homes. Both pilots were able to make it to shore with minor injuries. The plane sank and is the NTSB 's problem now. Reports are sketchy on just what caused...

    Buying A Piper Seneca II

I have about 3,000 hrs in a Seneca both as an instructor and flying the owner and folks around. It's definitely not the fastest twin around but maintenance is about as cheap as you can get with two turning. Lots of parts available, too. Being an entry-level twin will help with insurance over...
