KWVI Watsonville MId Air, Multiple Fatalities

I've flown into KWVI many times from KMOD and the straight in approach works for us most of the time. the key is to listen to CTAF to see if there's traffic in the pattern. More than once, i've had to make a half-circle to enter down wind on the 45. the Twin clearly announced his position, but...

    Name Change Olympics

The Name Change Olympics continue. When i last wrote, the Fresno FSDO had (again) forwarded all my paperwork and documentation to the FAA to issue a new certificate with my new name and gender. When i still hadn't received my license by late September, i first contacted the FAA, who told me...

    Name Change Olympics

I must say i'm blessed to be part of this community. Flying has been a passion since i was 16 and each time i take-off, i'm reminded of the wonder that i'm privileged to enjoy.... Most likely, this is just a big screw-up by both the FSDO and the central FAA office. The application and materials...

    Name Change Olympics

While i could bug the FAA for a new temporary license, i'm just going to keep carrying my old one until the new one arrives, which hopefully happens this year. It shouldn't be THAT hard to change your name, as i assume plenty of women pilots update their licenses when they marry. The CA DMV was...

    Name Change Olympics

I'm a pilot and i'm transgender. Now, i know this forum runs Red, but i'm happier flying as Laura than as <deadame>. I initiated my name and gender change last December, receiving a court order in late January. Then began the gauntlet of changing my name in every nook and cranny that could be...

    Declared First Emergency

I can't dispute this. Only afterwards did i notice that in ForeFlight's checklist section are several nifty Emergency checklists for occasions like mine. Yes, i could have been better prepared in my plane's emergency procedures.

    Declared First Emergency

From all the reading i've done since coming back to flying six years ago (I took 40 years off for life.), i learned that it's always best to declare if you need it and that there's rarely paperwork afterwards. That i had ATC's attention and help, even if briefly, was reassuring.

    Declared First Emergency

Thats a great story. Thanks for sharing. I got my PPL at KCCR through PSA in the late 60s. Brian

    Declared First Emergency

When i asked the AP how to check if the vent was working, he suggested i take off the fuel cap on the left wing, and the blow into the vent tube under the left wing. I did and air flowed freely. And, yes, fuel dripping a bit after topping off is fairly normal. Brian

    Declared First Emergency

Speaking from experience, i'd say i'd lost a few IQ points, too. Once i pushed the mixture to full, and the problem repeated itself. What i didn't think about was to pull the carb heat. It didn't seem logical that i'd have icing since i'd not lowered my RPMS to descend from 5500 to 4000. Today...

    Declared First Emergency

Sounds like good advice. I love my little C150 with its crappy payload and slow speed. It's wonderful for day trips though. I'd taken off with tanks topped off, but when i talk to our AP, i'll mention this possible solution. Thanks, Brian

    Declared First Emergency

Sunday, on a flight from Modesto <KMOD> to Watsonville <KWVI>, i had to declare an emergency and land in San Martin <E16>. The flight is one i've taken many times before, and, as with all flights over 30 minutes, i was on flight following. Now, the flight involves passing over two mountain...

    Sky Writing/Sky Art

I'm wondering if anyone here has tried drawing pictures/words using their flight path. i've seen various examples, including dildos, airplane outlines, and phrases, so i'm wondering if people have figured out the easiest way to draw these patterns on their EFB. i've attempted loading a picture...

Accident at KMOD, my home airport

NIce to see another valley person here. I know the procedure to start a C150 and C172, but i can't figure out how they did it if they weren't in the plane... Can't wait for the FAA report on this one. Brian

Accident at KMOD, my home airport

I have no idea how someone can start a plane if they're not in it. https://www.modbee.com/latest-news/article225311020.html

    Tailwheel endorsement, typical time

Haven't flown a TW since the early 70's, but looking at my logbook, i found it took 4.5 hours to get signed off. (loads and loads of landings during those hours.) It was a champ and enormously fun to fly.

Yaesu Handheld to Bose headset adapter

That was actually the first thing i tried. However, because the 3.5mm out on the handheld contains both audio in and audio out feeds, it wouldn't translate to the BOSE. The Yaseau did come with a simple cable that connects to the 3.5mm out and included aviation audio in/out connectors so i could...

Yaesu Handheld to Bose headset adapter

Success. i've received the cable i referenced from Amazon and i'm happy to say that i can now plug my handheld into my BOSE headset and hear a second radio while i fly. Now, no more need to ask ATC to go off frequency.

Yaesu Handheld to Bose headset adapter

We have a single radio with a flip-flop, which does allow me to go off frequency to grab ATIS, but my main goal of having a portable unit is to provide access to a second frequency simultaneously. I"d love to refit the plane with a new IFR ready panel, but sadly i co-own with four others so...
