Forward vs Aft CG and Cruise Speed/Efficiency

Legend has it that Mooney demo pilots would slide their passenger seats all the way back and lean back in order to get the 201’s TAS close to the advertised 201 mph. Anyway, the performance gain from moving the cg aft is easily demonstrated: in smooth air, set the power, trim, and note your...

The "Back in my day" Thread

I can even top that! At summer camp, I could buy a whole box of 100 Atomic Fireballs for something like 88¢. But that was a long time ago, mister. Here’s what we get them for now:

The "Back in my day" Thread

One time I was hankerin’ for an Atomic Fireball at a convenience store. They were 15¢ each. I commented to the young lady behind the counter, “Wow! I can remember when these were a penny apiece!” I got a look, followed by “I’m sure that was a long time ago, mister.” Yes, I guess it was.

    Auto conversion ideas

I can’t help but think you might be exaggerating here. Or at least choosing to exclude a whole bunch of expense items necessary to keep your plane in the air.

    Posting pictures

That copy/paste works on my iPad running Safari! Thanks for the hint! It’s a lot simpler than the slightly convoluted method I was using, grabbing a link and posting it between “img” tags. Oh, and GiGi is still doing great 3 months post-adoption!

    Florida in Crosshairs Again…. Milton

We have a family driving up to our house near Copperhill, TN, so that option is out. Still, if you want to fly in, our Honda Element is the crew car there, and there are likely motel rooms still available in the area.

    Paradise Lost?

My daughter is in Seffner, FL*, just east of Tampa, so we’re keeping a very close eye on Milton. Usual open invitation to anyone needing to bug out to N GA, E TN. *Seffner is best known for its sinkhole. A while back it swallowed a man sleeping in his bedroom who was never found...

Cirrus down at PVU 9/27 16:00Z

Good summary here. In short, they’re designed to be quite “spin resistant”. But it seems like inherent in that design is a suddenness of a stall/spin if provoked.

    Planes and hurricanes

    1) I lived in S FL for 30 years, and owned aircraft for most of that time. I recall relocating aircraft at least twice. If one is in the path of a hurricane, I think relocating is The Most Conservative Action. I’ve seen too many photos of destroyed aircraft post-hurricane to take any threat...

Seek input on buying a LSA

Agreed. “…all three wheels almost simultaneously…” IS poor technique in a CT. No reason not to hold it off until at or near stall speed with the nose held off as long as possible.

Seek input on buying a LSA

If not already mentioned, there’s a forum specific to CT’s: https://www.ctflier.com/ Going E-LSA is highly recommended - one can perform any maintenance and parts substitution and modifications so long as such mods do not elevate it beyond LSA standards. Plus, the ability to perform the Annual...

Talk Me Out of a Cirrus

Ages ago I had a fair amount of time in a student’s P210. At the time it was a virtually new aircraft and was almost magical in its ability to cruise in comfort in the flight levels. I think this was taken while I was preflighting it in Lock Haven. That said, don’t they have a reputation for...

Talk Me Out of a Cirrus

The “feel” of the sidestick on our SR22 never bothered me in the least. I don’t recall any students complaining about it either. I already commented to the Facebook post that I think the speed and attitude on touchdown was near perfect. There was supposedly a significant crosswind, and that...

    Leaning during climb

The engine monitor in my Cirrus made that easy. There was a “Normalize” function that set the EGT bars to “zero”. Then it was easy to lean as necessary to keep them there. As I recall, if the bars moved down, you needed to lean enough to bring them back up. Easy peasy. I suspect some other...
